Hail sale? Stay away?

Hey guys wanted to get your advice on something.

I just started looking to buy a 19 or 20 foot Bambi flying cloud. Kind of fits both worlds of what I want to tow and what I want to spend.

In searching I did find some airstreams that were on sale do to a 'hail sale'

Obviously there's going to be some hail damage to the outside but is there anything functionality wise I should be concerned about at this is a product I wanted to seriously look at?

If I run into more hail or damage and need a insurance claim- does this previous damage effect that process? Any insight?

I've not seen the unit in person and was not going to make the trip up to see it if you guys have a strong opinion against it.

This is my first trailer and I'm all about a good deal even if there are a few 'beauty marks'

Here is the link!

http://www.windishrv.com/product/new...-23d-718374-29

Please educate me!!

If I can upgrade to a double axel 23 on a deal I'm all ears!

Dustin

We met a fellow Airstreamer visiting the RV park we full time in. His 27FB was so dented it looked like a golf ball. He told me he purchased it brand new that way and saved a ton of cash doing so. No water leaks. Great conversation piece. The discount he got over "pristine new" more than covered the cost to replace all the dented panels, which he said he had no intention of doing. Go for it!

No damage mentioned in the ad copy. I would give them a call. I have a feeling they are using the phrase "hail sale" simply as a hook.

Not likely he could have saved enough to replace the panels. Our 27FB wasn't as bad as this description and repair quote was over $53K. That would be one heck of a markdown.

Stay away unless discount is north if 50%. Those units at windish were an insurance write off.

I wonder if that gives them a salvage title. Insurance may become an issue if so.

Agree, dealer already made money back from insurance and now trying to double dip. I don't think they discount them nearly enough, you could never have them fixed and break even.

I was looking at prices, and the discounts for the hail units were not lower than what I got for a new one 6 months ago. Not worth it IMO as well.

My brother lives about 3 blocks from Windish, he had hail just slightly smaller then baseballs. Hail damage to his house was in the tens of thousands. Trailers I saw at Windish were literally beat to S@#T.

If they are just calling it a 'hail sale' but that unit is not damaged, 27% off is an awesome deal.

20% off is generally accepted to be a really good discount. Any new unit that would be a good target; then with hail damage, subtract $2,500 per panel. Then discount from there for the hassle.

Is that unit actually damaged?

Unhappy Aluminium skin

The repair numbers I'm seeing are about right since it has happened to us - TWICE ! First time I fixed it - next time NOT. I took the insurance and bought a replacement. A fibreglass Airstream Land Yacht MH & bought back the almost new 2010 trailer from the insurance company.
Our insurance company has stopped repairing aluminium damaged by hail if more then ~30% of apprised value. They don't specify name AS but their weasel words tell all.
Although I didn't repair the skin yet it is used by the kids until......someday arrives, I will not sell it with dents - as minor as they are for fear of being labeled a scammer.

If mother nature is trying to tell you something I don't ignore the warnings

Guys thank you for all the insight. I'm going to dig a little deeper and see if this unit was damaged. If it was I think the sound advice would to keep looking after what I've read.

Thank you!!

I have seen hail damaged aluminum trailers get totaled. Then, after a couple of years in the sun, the dents are mostly no longer visible. The problem with widespread damage is that all the panels are going be replaced using Olympic rivets. To use bucked rivets, then the interior panels have to be R&R'ed. This in labor intensive and that is the limiting cost factor. This is where an "Agreed Value" policy comes in handy.

Yeah I've read a good amount on the agreed policy from another helpful post on this site. It definitely seems to be policy with the most protection.

Thank you!

I was looking and researching one of the Ford trucks from this area as part of the hail sale. From the research I learned, every recommendation was to stay away, most insurance companies won't insure as they fear claims against previous damage, as you know they don't like preexisting conditions. The title, as far as vehicles go, will have hail damage stamped across it, for any future sale.

There is an insurance auction website, that sells everything, from burned out to rolled over scrap, they usually have a number of newer trailers with hail damage that were classified as totaled, as cost to repair (replace panels) was higher than new value. The auctions can get you a MUCH better deal than a dealership double dipping trying to steal your money.

For anyone actually interested in this trailer a simple phone call could answer all the questions and end useless speculation.

Been to Windishrv

Hi,

We were at windishrv about a month ago looking at the 33ft classic. We saw the damage to the Airstreams they have on the lot. The damage on these units are really bad. They had a huge hail storm in this area with baseball size hail. The hail dents in these units are huge. Our sales person told us they are selling the units at a discount and are not going to fix them to sell them. I would not recommend these to anyone after seeing the damage on these.

I was looking at salvage title vehicles both cars and Airstreams (in Texas) and my insurance agent told me I could only get insurance for liability, not for further damage! I have heard that some insurance companies total Airstream if damage is over 30% of value
