We use a small grinder and a Moka Pot. Both take up little space and it makes a tasty espresso, though I add a touch of water for a semi-Americano. Aeorpress has been recommended to me. Has anyone tried one?

If you have a machine it's probably more about convenience and ease. I've made it manually for decades before buying a coffee maker. Suit yourself. I still make it manually while boondocking.

OMG!!!

A stove top roaster!!!

That is right up my alley!

I may just have to have one of those.

And a grinder.

Have you used it? And where to get the best beans?

There are a number of things that folks are very passionate about especially with food. One is their coffee and the other is their pizza.

I’m looking for a coffee maker with a stainless thermal carafe, no hot plate, and a lid that raises to expose the filter area. That allows me to use electric when I’m hooked up, but pour in hot water from a teakettle when I’m not. So I only need to bring one appliance. Any recos?

I'll add fresh Ohio grown sweet corn to this list.

I ordered one, also a manual grinder and a 3 lb bag of green coffee beans...the last two as recommended by Amazon.

That will get me started.

We’re in a pandemic, so switching things up a bit for our housebound selves is particularly good for the soul.

IMHO.

Maggie, I roast a lot of coffee. Look at Sweet Maria's in CA for a lot of information on roasting, green coffee, etc. It is a lot of fun.

I will do that, and thank you.

We/I have always loved picking up coffee at local roasters, and just walking in those places is such a olfactory rush I just want to curl up in a corner and stay there.

It’s going to be fun to try this out.

BTW - There is a facebook group on home coffee roasters. Another good place to learn.

How well does the carafe work--does it keep the coffee hot for a while? I'm looking at this one and the Oxo 9 cup but some reviews say the carafe doesn't work well.

The carafe works ok. But I don't use the factory one anymore. I purchased some that a glass vacuum type carafes and just raised up the machine to make them work. These work very well, keeping the coffee hot for hours. We typically make anywhere from 10 to 20 cups a day. And for gatherings we will have 30 to 40 cups. With the different carafes we have lots of options.

Yes I used the little manual roaster for almost 3 months before I built a home roaster out of my Weber Kettle BBQ grill. Now I just carry my roasted beans with me whenever I camp and occasional I'll bring the little handheld just to awaken the campground in the late afternoon.

Get a glove to hold the roaster, little swirls over the stove, campfire. You will see the beans turn color, and listen for the first crack. About a minute from that it will go silent, your beans are good to go anytime after the first crack starts. Then delay your time till you enjoy the proper color roast of your desire.

Sweet Maria's website has an abundance of information. All trail and error. But perhaps the most enjoyable time spent perfecting your own personal taste.

See ya on the road!

I’m excited to try this, tho don’t see myself roasting beans every evening it will be great fun for weekends and/or company.

I loooove the idea of roasting late in the day to enjoy the (cooled) beans freshly ground in the morning.

A self-nurturing, totally harmless, mildly indulgent behavior, and we can all use more of that.

I’ve sent a link to my coffee-guru son, as well, so Amazon may see a rush on these since posted here.
