Airstream Carry-Bikes by Fiamma

Has anyone installed a Airstream Carry-Bikes by Fiamma – Classic/Excella on there 2017 or 2018 Classic? If so, were there any issues or problems during the installation?

I’ve read mixed reviews. Ended up making a bike rack for the truck. Will end up buying a camper shell and likely a custom bike rack from there.

Have to drill holes in the aluminum skin and limits access to the rear storage compartment...no thanks. We bought two full size folding mountain bikes from Montague with carry bags. Fold them up, put them in their cases and store them in the trailer when we’re moving. A little pricey but so is the Fiamma rack.

A camper shell can have rails installed which accept Thule or Yakima roof mount components.

I ordered and installed rails on the last truck’s cap, it worked fine. For this truck I ordered a shell with rails. The option cost less than buying the previous rails.

We have the Airstream Fiamma on our 2016 30’ International. The bike rack has been great. Over 30,000 miles and no issues. I can still access the rear compartment with the bikes off.

Two recommendations.
1. Have a good Airstream Dealer complete the install. It has to be installed just right.

2. Weigh your bikes. Check me on this but I believe the max weight was 70 or 75 lbs.

I did the same. I mounted four fork mounts on a 2x6 but facing the other direction. I like that the handle bars fall below the truck cab so that my roof rack can hold my kayak or canoe without interfering with the bikes. Still room in my truck bed for the generator. For me, a shell would get in my way. I have a roll n lock bed cover I pull when not loaded with all the above.

I received a response from the Airstream store. Since the 2017/18 bumper is not a three piece plastic bumper as in earlier models, the top mount bracket for the Classic/Excella bike rack will not work. They said to order the "Airstream Carry-Bikes by Fiamma" and not the "Airstream Carry-Bikes by Fiamma – Classic/Excella".

I had the Miami on my 28’ Intl CCD. It was “ok” -- one of the cast brackets broke, that was a $60 fix. It was a PITA to get in the rear trunk and it also blocked the view of my license plate. When I bought the ’15 Classic I ditched the two bikes and bought folding bikes instead. They fit in the back of the truck. Problem solved.

Bike Rack Installation

Yes - I installed the Fiamma on my 2018 33' classic. I watched the You-Tube video (which wasn't exactly correct for my trailer) and only had one major issue:

There are small carriage bolts that attach the channels where the bike wheels are held and need to be loosened up to adjust the width of the carrier. The nut galled on one of the bolts and had to be cut off. Round and round with Fiamma and Airstream until I got a replacement bolt. Three weeks total time until I could finish installation of the bike rack.

Bicycle installation and removal is a breeze!
