Shipping flooring inside our 27FB?

My clever bride suggests we can do a 2-4-1 move and save a bunch on our flooring if we buy it in the Portland area and put it in the coach before it is loaded on the ship bound for Alaska. The shipping cost is all about space, not weight. The weight of the flooring will be less than the payload rating for the coach, and can be spread across the floor pretty easily. Thoughts?

Should work as long it is secured so it won't move around an damage the interior of the trailer.

I'd wrap the materials in mover's blankets and pad all the corners to protect the AS and the materials. Ideal would be stacking the packages flat and braced such that they are unable to move in any direction if the AS is tilted quite a bit in any direction.

"dunnage and padding" is the important part of this packing process. Dunnage, or blocking and bracing, locks the cargo material in place, and padding prevents rubbing and other damage...think like the AS is bouncing around on a boat, and pack accordingly. Anything in cabinets and drawers ahould be well-secured as if it's going on a rough road as well...

Excellent post rmkrum.

Hard to imagine this "save money" approach actually saving money IMO!

Find an accepted way to buy the flooring locally, and ship it yourself, perhaps in a U-pack container etc..

For starters, how are you going to load long lengths of flooring into the trailer? A couple of interior dings from the sharp corners of the flooring pieces, loaded by amateurs, and you will have destroyed any savings before you even get the AS fully packed!

Not to mention the damage during a storm at sea.

A false economy IMO.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies - which confirmed that "inner voice" - so never mind. And to boot, a local contractor found a REALLY sharp pencil and we arranged for a local outfit to do the deed. Flooring at cost + 5% and labor for the install before the busy season. Works for me. Up to me to handle the demolition. Good thing my second job while raising the kids was demo work for a local flooring company; I guess.

When we shipped our 27FB to Alaska, we had the ProPride hitch loaded into the trailer. When it arrived, there were no problems.

I was amazed to find that one of the pillows had been placed on the seat back and it was still in place when I opened the door. I can't imagine that they could have handled it any more gently. Of course, the time of year has something to do with that as the Gulf of Alaska crossing could get hairy at the wrong time of the year.

I hear you on the timing. With a choice, I would not ship a brick across the gulf after October or before April. Hat's off to the folks that keep Alaska stocked and fed by braving those waters in winter.
