Remove dinette install recliners

So what do y’all think? Stressless recliners by Ekornes. Just my wife, 2 small Shelties and me…..so losing 2 sleepers won’t be a big deal. Put some stainless “D” rings in same holes as dinette mounts were at (on the wall) and put a little light colored putty in floor holes and then covered recliner area floor with black 1/2” anti fatigue mat….

Maiden road trip with new recliners this weekend..should be ok I think as the recliners are fairly heavy….

Your "living room" looks great. It is a fairly common "remodel" in Airstreams. Even Jackson Center does this for customers. I figure Airstream sells more trailers when they can say it sleeps 4 or more. But when it is just the two of you, the recliners are a better choice in my view. Just way more comfortable for the evening than a travel lounge hide a bed.

It looks lovely, cozy and comfortable. I think once you figure out what works for you and your travel style it's okay to change. Sometimes we worry to much about resale.

If resale is your main concern than one could easily return it to original condition to sell it. From the state of his/her recliners to original condition wouldn’t take more than an afternoon. What I’ve found with resell is there is a market that appreciates the upgrades and changes.

Like you mentioned above, this is our 3rd AS and we’ve found what we like from the others and have incorporated the changes into our 2022 30FBB and made it a truly custom unit. We have Classic money vested into our unit and aren’t worried about resale as the layout and upgrades are specific to our family. I’m sure there is a buyer out there for it, but we have no intentions on selling.

OP, Sorry for detailing the thread, just saw a comment and thought I’d lean in. Great job on your unit, I have a couple of pillows made out of your TB curtain fabric. Good choice.

Looks great! We have done the same to both AS we owned. A 25' FC and now a 30'Classic.
Both were done at Jackson Center then had Lambright recliners installed. Not real inexpensive but a whole lot more comfortable.

Recliners can double as emergency beds if they recline far enough.

Just came here to say I have a soft spot in my heart for BTs. Way back in the day, on board USS Midway in Yokosuka, Japan (as an airedale in a helicopter squadron (AW), we were up at NAF Atsugi, but embarked on Midway whenever she got underway), I was sent "below" shortly after making 3rd Class off the Fall '86 exam cycle to get a BT punch on a 2Kilo form. I had no idea what I was doing, but followed the guidance of my LPO. When I arrived down in "plant" and BT1 looked at what I had and informed me that the the "BT punch" was a ruse to get the BTs to tack on my newly acquired crow with a punch straight to the arm. He didn't punch me, neither did any of the others and I made new friends that day and saw first hand how the "black shoe Navy" lived and worked. I spent a lot of time with the "black shoes" and learned to appreciate the job they did. I will never forget their motto, "if we don't grove, the ship don't move." My fellow airedales would scoff at that, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only AW to be promoted to AW2 by the CHENG a year later. I needed up commissioning a few years later and retired in 2015 as a Commander with 30 years service, but that tour on Midway from 86-89 was by far the most memorable of them all.

Anywho, enough of the stroll down memory lane, your recliners look great, Master Chief, and far more comfortable than the dinette would be. If you get a chance, look for Mike Watt "Contemplating the Engine Room," a 1997 Alternative Rock/Fusion album on Apple Music (or other music sources) dedicated to the Black Gang.

Yes Sir!….I will look up the song…..many many BT punches, a steam blanket, a bucket of steam, relative bearing grease, etc….many an Airedale hit the Main Space looking for these. I did the decommissioning boiler inspections on USS Midway…….also was Engineering LCPO on 2 Conventional Carriers and COMNAVAIRFOR Senior Steam Generating Plant Inspector in late 1990’s…..seems like ions ago.

Thank you Sir for your service and the BT story….I always love to hear a good BT story….you were a lucky one because I will say many a young sailor left the Main Spaces with sore arms looking for BT punches!

Hand salute Sir!

We have Stressless recliners at home and are seriously considering doing the same upgrade.

Question though: how are you securing the chairs to the floor? Or do you let them "Float"around. I'm concerned that the rough highways we drive and many miles, that we will find them thrown around.

So the anti fatigue mat (not in these pics but is in post #1 pic) should help with some of that bouncing and moving I think. Between weight of chairs and cutting mat to fit the contour should help hold mat in place. Bought a 3’x12’x1/2” mat and cut to fit as one piece. I also put 8 stainless “D” rings in the holes where the dinette mounts were at and will use bungee thru the Recliner D ring to D ring…..2 bungees per chair….I will know more after this weekend.

And I do have 2 stainless screws in each D ring….

Never mind the recliners. What did you use on your sliding cupboard doors to make them sparkle that way?

Returned Salute.

Lemme guess, Connie and Kitty? Maybe JFK. All great ships.

I don't know if I was lucky, or just down to earth. I had more in common with the BTs, ENs, MMs, than the doofuses in my squadron, with the exception of the ADs, I loved swapping engines in the aircraft. I suppose stealing pizzas out of the wardroom on Friday nights and bringing them down to the main space didn't hurt either. I would walk in in my flight suit (remember, I was aircrewman with balls bigger than brains after all) I would walk in to the wardroom and complain about something or another, grab four or five pizzas and take them below. The CHENG stopped me once and screamed at me (you know CHENGS can do that) and asked me WTF I was doing, I said, "improving the morale of the crew . . . Sir". Very well, carry on. And that was that.

Also, my uncle was a BT on USS Kearsarge, CVA-33, during the Korean Conflict. Got out after the Korean War as a BTC and worked at steel mill in Mansfield, Ohio. He's the one that said, "Steve if you join the the f*cking Navy, be a f*cking airedale, not some g*d d*mn black shoe, they won't give a sh*t about you. At least you might get laid as a f*cking airedale, and it might be by a woman." He was a character. Taught me how to play poker and cribbage.

Sometimes I miss active duty.

Nice! The bench seating with the dinette is terrible for relaxing. We recently replaced it with two Lambright Lazy Relax-R "Swivel Full Wall Hugger" recliners with a smaller drop down table and base cabinet.

I would recommend fastening the recliners to the floor, maybe drill a couple holes in the base ring and screw it to the floor or use wall mount hat hooks that match the finish on the chair base and screw the hooks into the floor on the inside of the ring with the hook part on the ring. Just like stuff in the tow vehicle, anything not secured in the trailer will go flying during a panic stop.

We had to cut the front corner of the sofa and make it stationary with a shorter pullout bed section in order to provide room for the driver's side recliner to fully extend. They ended up building a new sofa with cushions and cabinetry.

BTCMUSN, love the recliner conversion. We have a 27' Intl. How did you handle the furnace ducting under the dinette bench?

So we carefully laid out and targeted location using the correct size hole saw that would take the plastic vent diffuser. Then used very short section of the duct hose (probably like 3-4”) and used hose clamps to hold onto that furnace outlet and diffuser installed into “former” storage compartment door. Used a door front from the storage under the dinette to match the rest of the wood accent color/texture….see picture below…then used a piece of black foam rubber to seal up against the inside aluminum radius and door front edge that we installed to give a barrier to keep heat and AC from getting back thru that pie shaped gap….worked out pretty good we think…..furnace heat is definitely better with this set up….heats Airstream “living room” a lot better..

BTCMUSN - so, how have the recliners held up on the road? Do they stay in place or do you find them 'scattered' once in awhile?
