No power to inverter outlets

So this my wife was using her hair dryer on an inverter circuit and all of a sudden the hair dryer stops and no power to the TV(both) and blu ray and rear inverter plugs. So I went to this forum and began the search and reading. Mine seems a little different maybe I just didn’t read enough. So my LED works on the remote switch and transfer switch has LED and when shift transfer switch to battery nothing to inverter switches. I’ve cycled circuit 7 on my panel the 15 amp circuit breaker to inverter switches and GFCI. No luck. GFCI reset works and resets the GFCI outlets.

So I’ve read about this Blue Sea Systems 35 amp fuse but can’t seem to find it. I have the WFCO 5110HP standard power inverter. Is the inverter gone? Is there a thermal reset maybe? As you can tell I’m reaching so what I’ve learned about this forum is there is a lot of very smart people on here probably has the same thing.

Can someone help me in the right direction?

Thanks…

There is a reset button on the inverter. I believe a small red button on the end of the inverter. In our case it can be reached through a small access door under the mattress, no idea where yours is though.

If you have the factory 1000w inverter, it's not rated for most hair dryers. I removed my WFCO inverter & replaced it with a larger unit (2000w) that would power a hair dryer. My old WFCO unit has a fuse on the back in addition to the reset button. You may try looking at that to see if it's blown. If that & the other recommendations mentioned above don't fix it, I'd say you've got a broken inverter.

PS - If you're interested, I'd sell my old one pretty cheap. It works but I don't need it any longer. PM me if you're interested.

Good Luck!

Just checked the old inverter, no fuse on it, just reset button. That must have been on the converter I removed from the trailer. Sorry, my bad.

Hi

Some factory stock 1,000W inverters have a reset button, others have a fuse in a fuse holder. It all depends on which one you got. Is the holder / button on the front face or the back of the inverter? Again, depends on which one you happened to get.

Past that there is a giant fuse in series with the input of the inverter. If that goes and you get a replacement from the local big box store .... yikes .... much cheaper online.

Indeed, most hair dryers will overload the stock inverter. In combination with this and that, they will also overload many "2,000W" inverters. Bumping up to the 3,000W class is an option. Remember that the batteries need to be able to feed whatever you put in. The cables and input fuses get swapped out when you "go bigger".

So looking at the WFCO 5110HP manual right above the AC power in looks like to be a 12 amp breaker. I can’t seem to find a fuse. It’s 100 degrees this afternoon so I’m gonna wait till sun goes down. On my 2018 International 27FBQ the inverter is mounted vertical in the front access compartment. I can lift the bed but only can see the top of the inverter. The inside cargo hold has a faux wood wall that protects both the converter and inverter. My guess is that I will have to remove that faux wall and see if I can access that breaker switch and see if that is the issue….otherwise maybe inverter went?

Any of this make sense?

Since you were using the inverter, does that mean you were not plugged into 120v power? Is it possible that the wattage draw was so great that you drew down your batteries to a point too low for the inverter to produce 120v to the outlets?

Chances are the internal fuse is blown. I have an older 600 watt inverter and that was the case when I overloaded it. 1000 watt will not support a hair dryer. Not even sure why you'd bring one camping. But in any event if you want this thing to come to life again you would need to remove it and open it up and fend the fuses to replace. Just make sure you disconnect the power to it. It does have an inline fuse to it, but most likely it will still be ok, but of course measure it first. On mine the fuses were the automotive style fuses and easily found and replaced. The biggest pain was removing the inverter under the couch.

Good luck.

I have an older model WFCO 600 watt inverter. The PO admitted she plugged in a vacuum cleaner and turned on the inverter. She thought it was damaged. When I got the AS home I opened the case and found 2-35 amp ATC fuses inside. I replaced them, then blew out the (expensive) inline fuse to the battery when I shorted the 12 volt connection.

Anyway, it's unlikely that the inverter is bad, they are fuse and breaker protected. Look for a reset button on the inverter. Check your owners manual for where it is or if it is internally protected with ATC fuses. You'll have to remove the inverter to get to those (most likely). Remember to disconnect the negative battery cable to the AS.

If that's not the issue then take a voltage reading across the incoming battery wires to see if you have voltage there. If not, then you'll have to replace the inline fuse.

Updated - 31 Jul 21 1330 - was able to lift up the bed on my 27 FBQ and get to the inverter and reset the breaker at the bottom of the WFCO 5110HP. Immediately the inverter outlets came on and problem solved. Learned a lot and thanks for the help! This time an easy fix!

There was a thread on the topic of hair dryers and using the 1000W inverter, it is possible:

Thanks Master Chief……as you probably know I’m not an electrician but really wasn’t rocket science either…..simple system understanding and troubleshooting and read the manual on the WFCO 5110HP it was right there…..15 amp service breaker and 12 amp component breaker…..no fuse that I could tell so breaker reset on the “bottom” side and I was all set!

I am far from an electrician myself. Good trouble shooting Master Chief. Our Navy did teach us how to read a tech manual.

Have a safe and uneventful rest of your trip.
