Heading Home With Our Aluminum Dream!

It took an extra week but we're on our way home!

The wired brake controller is the way to go for the 7P5 VWAG platform seems to be the right way to go. The wiring is dead easy using the Tekonsha TB0021. Also good to report that I didn't have any fast led light issues on the way home.

We picked it up in Tennessee and now we're in the middle of Virginia on the way back to Maryland.

I already had to replace the glass fuse on the electric jack. Oh well. Wondering if water got in the casing? The rain and cold weather is crappy on the east coast right now.

The other issue I noticed is the windows are a son of a gun to open up!

Congratulations. It was a good day in spite of the weather. Looks like you are already camping. That's a great way to try it out.

It's the only way to try it out!

Although it's just me and the adult son so we're not really cooking but the fridge works for the adult beverages!

The windows need a little help to open. Some folks use a credit card. We use a flat wooden spatula to carefully work open our windows. The dealer suggests a coating of 303 Aerospace Protectorant and rejects the use of silicone. It sticks more.

Good luck. Travel safe. Pat

On your windows we have always used the silicone spray once a year and we never need to pry them open. I apply the spray to a soak an old rag and wipe the rubber seal, wait for it to dry before closing window.

Get some Window Poppers. One of the best investments I made. Got tired of silicone, credit cards, etc. http://www.seeyoudowntheroad.com/window-poppers/

We found with the windows: release the latches, wait a few mins, easy open...

Really nice, well-matched combo, congratulations!

The window seals are especially sticky when new, use Aerospace 303. If the battery voltage is low, it is more likely to blow a fuse as current draw will be higher.

Learn good inspection and maintenance procedures for your new Airstream, and set up a routine about once a quarter to perform it. Pay special attention to leak checks in the plywood subfloor (moisture detection meter), and corrosion inspection, prompt repair of nicks and scratches, and preventive treatment of shell edges, accessories, and frame with products such as Corrosion X.

It can last a lifetime and look good all the way.

Very nice! Of course, I'm partial to Airstreams pulled by SUVs, especially white ones! Enjoy your adventure!

BTW - Strongly suggest you get or create your "before driving away" checklist. It will save you errors, money and embarrassment. Lots of good threads and postings on the Forum with checklists. Message me if you want a copy of ours.

What sticks more, the silicone or the aerospace protectorant?

So the dealer in TN recommended the silicone and we found the quick dry one at the local big box store. We also found a really thin putty knife that seems to work instead of our credit card

Thanks for the advice!

So what are some of your maintenance routines - I'd like to learn from the folks that have had their setup for a while - and rather not reinvent the wheel.

Hello chris_kelly,

Congrats on your new Airstream! We too picked ours up recently and we're also from Maryland! Maybe we'll see you out someplace.

Enjoy exploring! Take care,

I use the 303 myself. It has almost eliminated any sticking even after storage for 3-4 months. It is also good protection of all your other rubber, plastic, non-metallic parts. It has been around for many years and contains no petroleum distillates such as ArmourAll.
