2019 Serenity 28’ 2 ACs or 1?

A nice looking 2019 Serenity just popped up near by. Won’t be able to see it for a couple of days but one thing I noticed is that it was wired for 30 Amps and has a single 15K BTU AC. I’m assuming you could get one like this with dual ACs. Just wondering how well the single 15k does in hot climates like FL? It’s probably sized ok for a 28 ft trailer bit there’s more brutal heat coming the way things are going.

I have a 28' Serenity. No brainer: 2. 1 will simply not work well in Florida climate. I live in Wisconsin and want 2. That doesn't mean we run 2 all the time. But once it gets above 90 that one unit will run constantly unless you are in shade. My advice is that if you get AS with one, then you want to get awnings on every window possible. In fact one of the upgrade I want to do is put a full length awning on the other side. When not in a shaded site it gets very warm with the sun blaring in the windows. And we want to leave the shades up during the day. Plus the AC units won't run constantly.

Sometimes I wonder why I ask questions I already know the answer to.

No such thing as a dumb question.

You touched on the other benefit - 50A service vs. 30A. That’s two 50A circuits which is really nice when you want to run multiple devices at the same time. Plus you get 1+1 redundancy if one AC fails; won’t ruin your camping trip and they are both heat pumps.

Ssomething rarely mentioned here are thermal curtain liners. This will complement awnings, shades and A/Cs. I use all of the above and we stay relatively cool in hot climates.

Yes these are both big benefits. with 50A You can do things like run the microwave or electric hot water heather when the AC is running. You hit limitations on 30A service.

You can always plug into 30A if that is all that is available, but 30A trailers cannot leverage the benefits of 50A - which is actually 2x 120v @50A vs 1X 120v @30A (12,000watts power vs 3,600watts power available to the trailer).

I've had an AC fail. It sure was nice at the time to have a second one that still worked!

1 or 2 AC's

We have a 2019 FC 25 RBT with 1 AC. We winter in Melbourne, Fl. WE take the AS down in October and set it up for the winter. Also spend a week at Ft. Wilderness at Disney. Last October it was pretty hot at Disney. Our 1 AC did the job well. Having said that if I had a 28' AS I would go with 2 AC's. The 25er is as big as you want with 1 AC. Hold out until a 50 amp unit becomes available.

That’s what I was thinking. I’d do a single AC in a 25’. My 21’ jayco is holding its own in this heat right now, but that extra volume and surface area in the blazing heat might be the limit.

By the way, what kind of power Mgt systems do Airstreams come with? My 40’ DP would automatically shed loads on a programmed priority if we were hooked up to 30 amps instead of 50.

Power Management in AS

Well....in our FC the power is managed by the occupants. If you ask for to much the breaker trips. Seriously, there are no power management systems built into AS's that I am aware of. We have never had a problem with tripping breakers because we a mindful of how much each appliance we are running draws. 30 amps is not a bunch but if your even the least bit careful there is not a problem. A 50 amp unit leaves more room for error. If your running 2 AC's at the same time you should pay attention to other electrical draws.

I know some of the Interstates have power management systems and I saw a Basecamp with power management (they are 30 amp to start with). I haven't seen it on other trailers. Maybe the Classics?

It has been my experience that when it gets above 90 that although the 2 AC units will run they seldom run at the same time.

Are those 2 13.5s or a 15k and a 13.5?

2019 Serenity 28’ 2 ACs or 1?

With the exception of the 30 & 33 classic, Airstreams from the factory deploy a 15k midship and a 13.5k in the bedroom.

Currently Classics are configured with dual 15k units.
