Airstream Truck Camper

I thought that only Avion made a truck camper. I stumbled across this Airstream truck camper on route 151 in Virginia today. This would be a very interesting project.

Great find, Dan!

Your post got me moseying around the forum. Did you know there is a thread for "Abandoned aluminum?"

https://www.airforums.com/forums/f41...um-108563.html

Nice!

The Photography forum has some other odd-ball threads on the older pages:

Cheers,

Peter

Am not so sold that this is an example of an Airstream camper insert as opposed to a modified Airstream trailer dropped onto a stake-body.

IIRC, even the Avion camper insert had the common rear entry door.

Definitely an awesome find though!

Agreed. Check the sloppy piecemeal aluminum sheet metal work all around the cab-over part.

Peter & JayTheCPA

I also agree. The sloppy aluminum work at the bottom also supports this statement.

You’re good. It is actually a ‘64 though, according to the for sale sign.

1967 Northern Il. president Roger Piper of Princeton Il. had a 26 ft. AS mounted on modified frame [stretched] ford truck. A frame was cut off & axles removed. Maybe some pics in archives of this mod. If any found please post as I did not take any at that time.

Awww - beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I would LOVE to have that and do what Moosetags does - that in the truck bed and towing another AS behind.

A 1947 Liner gave its life for this . . .

The Airstream shell on the Ford flatbed truck is from a 1947 22' Liner serial number 1078 per the s/n tag. This is an early Liner shell with standard household door hinges between the body and outer door only; they do not extend to the inner door. Once loosened, the inner door-within-a-door is removed and usually placed underneath the trailer or, in this case, the truck.

It is easy to imagine the pipe frame chassis of the original Liner eventually failed and was removed, leaving the shell to be repurposed.

I like the concept, but the execution is rougher than a cob. The metal skid strips of the wood flatbed floor add a new rub to an Airstream interior. Cleaning up the exterior and installing a functional but folksy interior could make this an eye turner for multiple reasons. The drawing board calls!

I saw a home-built pickup topper shell mounted on a Chevy 1500 once that looked as if it had been made by the Airstream factory.
All polished aluminum with rounded corners and rivets to hold it all together. No AS hitched up behind it, but it would have made a stunning combo on the road.

Looks like something Dave M. would have had that ran "Trailer Buff" for many years outside Nellysford, VA

I don't think he's doing trailers anymore, but not sure if he's gotten rid of his shop.

Stay Healthy,

More correctly, it's what mooseatgs used to do. We sold the truck camper in 2017. We had some great times with the Outfitter truck camper, but in the last couple of years that we had it, we found that we were just not using it as much as we had originally. We reverted back to a 3/4 ton truck and have continued on with just Lucy.
