What Can You Tell Me About This 1970's Airstream Ad Near the Golden Gate Bridge?
I love this photo for multiple reasons. The cool blue gray sky is such contrast to the warm glow coming from the Airstream. It is so incredibly inviting and looks so much nicer than outside. It's not hard for me to picture my own pretty lady in that spot. I'll stop before I get to sappy.
Can someone tell me about this rock guard upfront? it appears to be flat plastic panel heat molded and polished? Or maybe glass? I have been thinking about how to replicate this. It looks like the center window and wing windows are missing the little slide cover and now have gas struts. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Anyways any details at all about this photo are appreciated, including where I can get a high res poster.
Thanks,

I think that window guard is one of the molded Lexan guards used back then. Vintage Trailer Supply sells one for an older front window style, but back in the day there were versions for the pre-wrap-around style front windows too. You can occasionally spot them on older trailers in ads.
Good luck finding one for your trailer.

I find this interesting with these old models the curved windows are at least functional. I don't like with ours the side window protectors that are more or less permanent. We get a very filtered view out the sides of the front panorama and a clear view part way up on the center window, but it's nothing like the back panorama window where we get a full view.

I was always impressed by the silver candle sticks and the Champagne bucket. The rock guards came with the new Airstream design of the late 60's. I don't know what plastic that they were made of, but they quickly deformed and turned brown. Airstream didn't keep them very long.

That image appears in some of Airstreams recent literature including the UE brochure: https://www.airstream-germany.de/wp-...-2023-1-EN.pdf
I'm betting this was advertising art that they still hold the rights to.

The square bottom of the front side-lite wing windows tell it’s a 1969.
The red dress female model behind the glass may have appeared as early as 1967 stepping out the door in a yellow housedress. The Philips-Corning windows next to her without stainless edging say ‘66-’67.
In the 1968 brochure you can see the crystal glasses, candelabras, tablecloth, silverware, china, wine, and possibly nicely browned butterball bird parts on a platter.
I think 1967 was the year Beatrice Foods purchased Airstream. The transition from pre-’69 “Twinkie” style body to the wider/longer “Loaf/Sausage” of the seventies was already in the works, and not a Beatrice decision.
And do please note the 1968 only, tilting swing-out movie-star make-up mirror. My ‘68GT came with one as a feature of its “Penthouse Bath”.
The 1968 woman has higher hair and is wearing high-heel shoes. Her Japanese styled dinner dress certainly fits the International theme. Could they all be the same blond woman?

If you want to see vintage airstreams go to youtube and look up the Airstream Africa caravan. It's about an hour long and will blow your mind on what they did with the tvs they had.

That photo was included in the 1970s brochures. I had a copy of the brochure (along with original owners and service manuals) when we owned our 1975. The literature went with the trailer when we sold it.
It was a different time. Fine dining in nice clothes was part of the lifestyle that Beatrice Foods/Airstream was selling in those days.

The woman in the original picture seems to be entertaining a ghost.

That's a '69 model Airstream. It has the "D" side windows with the squared outside corner at the bottom. They only did that in 1969 before they moved to a true "D" shape with both top and bottom of that window rounded for 1970.
There were a couple of different rock guards in those days... Airstream had experimented with both fiberglass and injection molded plastic. That looks like an early plastic one. I had a similar plastic one on my '70 Safari Special until it was "Gone with the Wind" one day after a 90 mile an hour gust came down a canyon where I was parked and sent my open rock guard over the top of the trailer and away. I never did find it.

This is my favorite Airstream ad picture. It suggests the elegant lifestyle you'll enjoy while traveling in your Airstream.
The 1970 specification sheet lists a, "Front window guard of transparent
Butyrate". Unfortunately, it became cloudy with time, as shown in the picture.

We had that rock guard on our first Airstream, a 1983 Excella. But I never knew it was supposed to be clear. Ours was whitish fogged and already broken when we got the camper. At the time (late 90's) I was seeing places to buy them but I think it is much harder now. I am not seeing anyone still selling them.
