I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
Our 2013 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 (one-ton diesel with duallies), fully and beautifully customized as a two person SUV with leather heated seats, top of the line stereo, windows all around, custom console with built in powered cooler, was designed and built because the Yukon Denali we were considering just didn’t have enough storage for our windsurfing/surfing gear. And of course, she's silver, to match your Airstream.
A VERY specialized vehicle. Ordered from factory with tinted windows all around, full liners top and side, interior lights, special headlights, tons of airbags, auxiliary battery, rear defroster and rear door storage, low roof (still 5’5” head room inside) and short wheelbase (144”) one ton with duallies, rated to tow 7500 lbs. The lower roof and smaller wheelbase still give you plenty of storage but make it much easier to squeeze into mini-mall parking and in general to use as a daily driver. The shorter wheelbase make it much easier to maneuver into tight camping spaces when towing.
Then on to the only factory approved LA based Mercedes approved Sprinter up fitter (ADF) where we did memory foam custom seats with two tone (black and grey) premium leather, top of the line Pioneer stereo with Nav, extra speakers, subwoofer under passenger seat and Mercedes backup camera and lights, special three compartment console in matching leather with built in electric cooler and factory dash switches to control cooler and appliances, wetsuit storage furniture/changing bench with 12’ aluminum ladder and tool kit storage (included.) There’s even a small cubby at the back of the console for binoculars or small camera. The cooler and appliances are controlled separately from two factory switches that we mounted low on the dash to the left of the steering wheel so they can be turned on/off while standing on the ground outside vehicle (to turn cooler on to precool for example.) Cooler, Fantastic Vent and all appliances (6 outlets for iPhone, tablets, computers, etc) are powered by a separate aux battery so your starter battery is never affected. The console is completed with a gooseneck mounted Wilson cell phone booster (removable should you prefer a third console cup holder in addition to the two dash and two door mounted ones.)
Expanded floor size, all black custom carpeted with matching mats in top grade automotive carpet for durability. 3 custom aluminum windsurf/surfboard racks (easily and/or permanently removable for many different configurations or to leave an wide open storage area). Just like your Airstream, there is a remote controlled multi fan speed whisper quiet screened Fantastic Vent with automatic rain sensor to keep the cabin aired out at all times. Side storage step cubby with diamond plated sliding doors. Full door length custom flat black diamond plated aluminum running boards both sides. And a silver dash kit with center mounted working yacht compass to finish it off!
Designed as the perfect two person luxury SUV for minimum size and maximum storage and payload capacity, it’s a multi-functional SUV with an upgraded hitch receiver rated for 10,000 lbs to increase trailer tongue weight capacity for the factory rated tow capacity of 7500 lbs. This takes full advantage of the surprising torque from the 3.0 litre Diesel engine and manumatic transmission augmented by the large 4.1 differential. This vehicle has the added factory suspension option for superior stability that increases the GVWR to 11,500 lbs, giving youa payload of over 5000 lbs. Generator? Bikes? Motorcycles? No problem! The rare low profile in a 3500 combined with the superior suspension adds to Mercedes’ already fantastic crosswind handling capability.
My wife immediately noticed that handling difference when towing, and said that it was much more stable than our 3/4 ton Suburban that it replaced.
The width is identical to the Yukon Denali and it’s 10” longer, with many times the storage capability. And of course the legendary Mercedes sports car-like handling is just ridiculously wonderful.

It breaks our hearts to have had to sell our 2013 International Ocean Breeze, but we found after two seasons that we just weren't leaving our new home in Maui to take mainland trips. Now that the Airstream has a happy new home, it's time to let the Sprinter go, too, and close that wonderful chapter of our lives.
