Title: 2008 Airstream Basecamp 16 - Idaho
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.
When it was first introduced 10 years ago, the Airstream Basecamp trailer was a collaborative effort by Airstream's product development team, Nissan Design America (NDA) designers Bryan Thomson and Steve Moneypenny and Kelty outdoor products. That year Airstream commemorated its 75th anniversary by releasing the first Airstream Basecamp (model year 2007). This futuristic trailer was designed to be both low cost and utilitarian and was intended more for outdoor adventure and hauling gear rather than a living room on wheels. The Basecamp pays homage to Airstream's past, taking styling cues from the original "Torpedo" trailer developed by company founder Wally Byam in the 1930s. The optional rear tent extension, engineered by outdoor products company Kelty, provides a lightweight way to double the available living space, or a great way to store your gear out of the elements.
The original Basecamp (like this 2008 model) had large clamshell rear doors that provided access for loading in a motorcycles, quads, bicycles or kayaks. Unfortunately, the end of 2007 also marked the beginning of the economic recession and Airstream had difficulty attracting buyers for the next two years, selling only about 220 Basecamp units, causing Basecamp production to be discontinued in 2009. Airstream reintroduced the Basecamp in 2017...But in a different floor plan and configuration. Gone were the rear clamshell doors and cavernous rear entry in favor of a more traditional single side door and more conventional travel trailer floor plan. The result of the 2017 reintroduction-redesign was a 700 lbs. increase in the weight (1950 lbs. for original model verses 2650 lbs. for 2018 model) and an increase in MSRP by nearly $15,000! New 2018 Basecamp MSRP hovers right around $40,000. Due to their low production numbers (roughly 220 units), lightweight, toy hauling capabilities and affordable cost, the 2007-2009 Basecamps remain a much sought after model over the reintroduced versions from 2017 on. Is it the ultimate toy hauling adventure Airstream trailer? Yes. It is The ONLY toy hauling Airstream trailer. For a 16 foot trailer, The Basecamp is very lightweight, incredibly easy to tow and with its 20" alloy wheels and ample ground clearance, very capable on and off-road.
