1972 Airstream Sovereign 31 - Washington

The Basics

Year: 1972

Make: Airstream

Model: Sovereign / Land Yacht

Length: 31' including tow hitch

Indoor ceiling height: 7'

Amenities include:

a large capacity wood burning stove with rear heat guard and custom tile base

a working four burner range stove top

large stainless steel two bay sink

full size acrylic clawfoot bathtub with detachable "telephone" shower head

full size standing closet

full size bed platform with under storage

custom hardwood floors throughout kitchen and living room

custom large capacity drawer storage in bedroom

custom ceramic tile flooring in bathroom

12'x8' treated wooden deck with stairs I would disassemble and include this in the deal if you're interested and planning on parking the trailer in one spot, which is what I've done

The Bathroom: When I first bought the trailer, the bathroom was all original and more or less non functional. The 3 gallon capacity electric water heater was broken, the floor beneath was rotted out, and the existing bathtub was only big enough for a toddler. So, I spent about 4 months renovating the entire bathroom down to the subfloor and insulation. I even inspected the frame underneath the subfloor to check for rust while we were at it, and I'm happy to report that the frame is in good shape. We also removed existing walls and closets to make the space big enough for a full size bathtub and closet. I did this work alongside two finish carpenters who installed custom woodwork throughout, including a live edge topped custom closet, a beautiful curved edge red cherry countertop, and more. During the process, we also discovered and fully repaired some early rear end separation which I had failed to spot when I purchased the trailer originally.

Current bathroom features include:

full size acrylic clawfoot bathtub with detachable telephonic shower head weighs less than 50 lbs

white porcelain above counter sink

Takagi tankless/on demand propane water heater professionally installed

full size closet

custom ceramic tile flooring

custom sealed red cherry countertops

custom shiplap ceiling

electric ceiling fan with external ventilation

custom rock work/backsplash surrounding bathtub and sink area

brand new plumbing and electric

The one big caveat about the bathroom is that there is currently no indoor toilet system. However, there is a space designated for an indoor composting toilet, such as a Nature's Head or similar brand/style. I toyed with the idea of installing one of these at some point but it just never ended up being worth it for me. I have access to an outbuilding on the property where I've been living that has an indoor restroom, so I just used that. I also experimented with some DIY indoor and outdoor composting toilet methods which worked well for me, but you need to have the proper space and knowledge to manage "humanure." If you're interested in this route, I'm happy to share resources, knowledge, and ideas. If you're wanting to go the easy route, you'll definitely want to get a manufactured composting toilet. Another option would be to park the trailer somewhere where you can attach directly to a septic without the need for a black tank which I removed during the remodel.

Based on my experience of living in this thing for the past five years, I strongly suspect that the next owner will want to 1 renovate and/or majorly update the kitchen and 2 replace the wheels. I can provide tons more info about the quirks on this thing, but I've reached my character limit for this ad. Shoot me a message for more info.

PLEASE NOTE: I do not have a vehicle capable of towing this trailer, so you will need to pick it up. I live up a gravel hill and the trailer is parked in a spot that's a little finicky to get to, so please be prepared to do some careful driving with a well equipped vehicle.
