1971 Airstream Overlander - Arizona

Title: 1971 Airstream Overlander 27 - Arizona
I just posted a new ad on Airstream Classifieds.

Silver Bullet Sojourns – masterfully renovated Airstream Overlander for sale. This 1971 completely refurbished aluminum gem will airstream you into Vintage with its exquisite craftmanship. The 27 foot trailer provides a luxurious getaway on wheels that delivers a home away from home. The clean and fresh, refurbished interior compliments this once outdated Airstream creating a uniquely modern feel. Explore and Discover your destination with this smooth sailing land yacht. Adventure, style and building new memories await you …

Enter the vintage airstream and to the right is a seating area for 5-6 adults as there is a sliding bench that comes around to the table for a true social experience. The table drops down flush with the cushions (modified since the picture was taken) to allow for an expansive sleeping area that is approximately 88″ x 48″ plus an extended portion with the sliding bench to allow for a very tall person to sleep (6’6″). Under all of the sunbrella fabric seating throughout is storage. Piano hinges reveal ample storage for bedding, games, food, towels, etc.

Enter the airstream to the left and you will find the galley with a beautiful farmhouse sink, residential faucet and plenty of room to prepare meals or stage your activities. Below the sink is storage on two levels and immediately to the left of the sink is the microwave and more storage. There had been an original heater but it was removed for more storage (and we live in Phoenix). Those of you iiving in a cold climate and needing more than a heat strip on the overhead HVAC unit can easily add back a heater to this slot (as the exterior venting still exists). I can also add back for $400 or will do it with a reasonable purchase price. Accross from the sink is a beverage cooler with a temperature range of 35-45 degrees. The upgraded range is very shallow and provides very usable space for storage of kitchen supplies, cups, etc. Adjacent to the range are stained wood crates that provide further storage. These areas are very deep and could be doubled up on most levels.

Beyond the galley is another searing area or what I would describe as two “day beds” facing each other. We built it structurally to handle a bunk bed on one side but we did not need additional sleeping accommodations and liked the clean lines without the overhead beds. Each bed is approximately 30″ x 72″. There are additional cushions to extend another 12″ but again we did not find it necessary and double up the cushions on one side when sleeping.

The bathroom is one of my favorite parts of the restoration. If you’ve ever seen an original bathroom, they were cramped and ugly. We started with a residential size toilet and created a custom enclosure to hide the tankless water heater. The sink and bathtub were created from galvanized tubs and adapted with all of the functional plumbing. The base of the sink is actually the functioning hot/ cold water pipes that feed into a valve that can be directed into the sink or into the shower head. We did not yet add a shower curtain because we found that closing the door to the bathroom has the same intended effect and kept a towel on the floor to wipe up any excess water from the bath/ shower. In a natural environment, it was great to open the window and the bottom exterior hatch to allow a “one with nature feel” and the function of accessing the shower head to wash feet outside!

Depending on our use, we wanted to be able to use the air-conditioner when not hooked up the “the grid” therefore a propane (dual fuel) generator was purchased so that we could divert one of the propane tanks to run the generator, producing electricity for the air conditional. When the AC is not needed, there is ample power from two (2) six volt batteries wired in parallel. As you can see in the pictures, there are ample power outlets and we upgraded with USB charging ports on each of the outlets.
Functionally, we have had all of the safety items upgraded as well…new tires, new bearings, new brakes, new safety chains and many other items I never knew existed.
We just returned from a trip to the beach in CA and therefore some of the pictures may have some of the remnants of our trip. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Defects include one major dent above the back window….I backed into the basketball hoop and a minor dent in the back left (before my time).
