This post inspired me with all the great options. In the end I decided to build my own shelf. The design is based on a floating shelf design from a company called
www.shelfology.com. I bought the Aksel bracket and made my own hard maple wood shelf for it. I used 1-1/2 hard maple to match the maple like laminate found in all the cabinetry. To be honest getting the internal rods drilled vertically and parallel to each other was the toughest part. I added some 1-1/2" x 1/16" thick aluminum along the edge so that there was just a little lip to keep my wife's earrings from falling off the edge in the middle of the night. It was a simple bolt through to the inside of the cabinet, slide on the shelf, and then adding the set screws underneath into the rods so it couldn't slide off the rods. Here are some progress pics.
