Purchased. Childs book shelf. Callled tidy books. Very light. Practically matched the interior color

My wife just wanted a place to set her book at night, rings and watch. And of course a morning cup of coffee.
I made this thin top for the bedside drawer. It is held in side-to-side place by self adhesive weather stripping. It can be left in place when the drawer is closed.
It slides back and forth for access to the items below it.

Also, sometimes called, "Genius", by those who've had a full cup of coffee!

DJarrett I started with almost the same thing. Then replaced it with a plastic serving tray with raised sides. Why? Because life stinks for about 30 minutes after you tip over a 16 oz. Mug of coffee into your "undies" drawer. A 3/4 inch rim is worth its weight in scones... and if you really want impress SWMBO serve her coffee with scones, muffins or pastries and a single rose. Of course the down side to that is she might not let you get back OUT of bed for a while.💋

This post inspired me with all the great options. In the end I decided to build my own shelf. The design is based on a floating shelf design from a company called www.shelfology.com. I bought the Aksel bracket and made my own hard maple wood shelf for it. I used 1-1/2 hard maple to match the maple like laminate found in all the cabinetry. To be honest getting the internal rods drilled vertically and parallel to each other was the toughest part. I added some 1-1/2" x 1/16" thick aluminum along the edge so that there was just a little lip to keep my wife's earrings from falling off the edge in the middle of the night. It was a simple bolt through to the inside of the cabinet, slide on the shelf, and then adding the set screws underneath into the rods so it couldn't slide off the rods. Here are some progress pics.

Thanks for sharing. Very nice with the matching wood and aluminum edge.
