FC30 Remodel - U shaped lounge with Office/Kitchen workspace

Last year we saw the Flying Cloud 26U with a U shaped dinette. We loved the concept but the rest of the AS seemed cramped and not what we wanted. We knew we wanted something bigger. As an avid sailor I'd seen a lot of elegant saloon solutions with rounded tables and seating with a lot of storage, that also convert to a bed. We also wanted good kitchen and office workspace.

After talking to Airstream we decided to get an FC30 with recliners - which was about to be discontinued. By chance we found one of the last remaining examples at Woodland Travel just 100 miles away from our home in Michigan. The major plus was that they have 50 years experience of renovating Airstreams. We bought.

We had a project.....!

So - out with the two recliners and the small coffee table which hid the invertor, out with the folding office table, and out with the dinette which cramped the kitchen area. We replaced the floor because we would have a few screw holes and scratches. The folding partitions were also replaced with a new curtain track.

After renovating through winter we took our Airstream to Alumapalooza last week and I think the majority of people who saw it agreed that it was comfortable, liveable and attractive. I'm sure it's not for everyone but it does check all the boxes we have.

Here are some of the photos include a couple of obligatory cat photos. I'll answer questions if you have any. Enjoy!

The worktops, including the kitchen are ply covered with zinc. It has a grey dust finish with clear coat.

The flooring is industrial marmoleoum (Farbo).

The table is a marine teak table which can be removed along with the tubular legs. A pull-out and two quarter-circle cushions convert the area to a massive king size bed.

The are are two long storage areas under each wing of the U and ill have space for 4xAGM in due course in the central section next to the invertor.

The sub-woofer from the dinette was moved slightly. The lower drawers are not very deep with the sub-woofer and water pumps behind them. The remaining drawers are huge!

We removed the folding 'table' flap near the sink (we don't need any more table space) and put in a towel rack and magazine rack.

Saw this on Instagram and though it was amazing! Thanks for all of the pics and ideas...You and Woodland did a fantastic job!

Looking at doing some modifications of our own in the future, possibly using Woodland (since they are close by)...How were they to work with?

I'm Duncan's wife and I think we both agree they were AMAZING. They quoted a figure up front and stayed within that budget except when we made changes (and there weren't many changes). The job was completed professionally and on time. Furthermore, you couldn't ask for a nicer group of folks. We enjoyed the process from beginning to end...

Love the camper. We purchased our 25 RB twin from Woodland Travel Center. They are great people.

Zinc is one of the few metals that are compatible with Aluminum without causing electrolysis problems.

We chose a grey dust finish but our local 'Zincsmith' can do a range of other colors - blue, green, brown or red.

Zinc is a little soft but it is heat tolerant. It goes well with the Aluminum interior.

Gorgeous trailer. Love the look of the zinc.

The last photo with the recliner -- so you were able to add one back in. How is the U sofa for sitting with your feet up, say, to watch TV?

Both the recliner and the U sofa are great for watching TV and gathering with friends. At Alumalooza, we had up to eight people gathered in the Airstream and six fit easily around the table. Using the recliner, five people can watch TV without any effort -- although we don't watch much TV. :-)

I forgot to mention. We copied an idea from someone else.

Under the rising bed we put an archway through to the rear compartment which was split 3/4 - 1/4 to accommodate a cat litter tray - fits exactly. The cat also has his own space under the bed, with a cat bed and scratch mat. We had a slider (plastic) which can close off one section or be open to both the bed and litter areas. We can open the rear hatch to empty the litter tray without him being able to escape.

I'll add a photo if anyone needs one.

We're not big TV watchers either, but as fulltimers, we still watch the news and weather when we can get it, and we watch DVDs from time to time. I'm also on my laptop a lot. In both circumstances, I like to have my feet up.

I'd love to see photos of your cat area. I was impressed with the idea when someone mentioned it on a another thread.
