One COE campground is North Abutment, Grenada, MS.
Another is Dewayne Hayes, Columbus, MS.
We go to Grenada most often because it takes an hour and ten minutes to get there- I can get off work at 5 and still be there before dark-
I really thought I was putting the names and locations of the parks in my posts-

Now that you mention it, I think you did state the name of at least the North Abutment, and it is very possible I missed the Dewayne Hayes name.

I'm going to try to keep a running list, by state, of nice campgrounds.

Thanks again.

Point Farms Provincial Park on Lake Huron this last weekend. We wouldn't dream of staying at commercial campgrounds unless absolutely necessary.

Trip diary here.

DJBStream - the Virginia state park system is near universal in its amazing sites/peaceful locations. Also, if you venture into the state, one of the best engineer corps campgrounds is in south central VA, North Bend Campground.

What we DO tend to have missing in the east is boo docking opportunities in the national parks and forests. Of the entire Washington/Jefferson National Forest along the VA/W-VA boundary, I know only of two locations you can claim to camp in the wild outside a campground with an airstream. Still - call around to the ranger stations in each national park or national forest section in w Va and ask them about dispersed camping opportunities.... They may have good locations to suggest.

I have also posted many pictures of George Payne Cossar State Park Yocona Ridge campground.
Choctaw Lake is a very nice U. S. Forest Service park at Ackerman, MS.
Poverty Point is a very nice Louisiana State Park in Delhi, LA. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach, FL is also a great state park. The photos and names might be in other threads, like Time You Spend in Your Airstream or Where Did You Wake Up This Sunday Morning.

We are just finishing a 3 week trip and have concluded that private/koa campgrounds maximize revenue with tight spaces. But, people seem to adapt to a privacy approach that gives you some privacy even though they are right next to you. Strange but as humans we adapt.
On the other hand the State/National/Corp of Engineer campgrounds give a lot of space and privacy without full hookups. Life is full of tradeoffs and I guess you can mix or pick which you like.
