New Group Milit-AIR-y
Fall In!
Being one of those families that travel around from place to place with the military has made Amy and I want to have a group dedicated for service members past and present, and their supporters. This forum could also be used as a place for communication and discussion about current military headlines, experiences and lessons learned, or anything else. Think of it as your online VFW, AMVETS, or LEGION hall without the booze!
It will be a couple of days until the forums reflects the group under the clubs/groups tab.
To start off the discussion, how many of you have read the citation for SPC Guinta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam war? Amazing what he did.

We'd love to hear from our extended military family! As many famcamps that we have been to...okay...maybe not a heck of alot...but we have yet to run into a 'streamer!
Keep us posted on comings and goings...
Yes SPC guinta was amazing, I'm just glad he was awarded the Medal of Honor before he died of old age!!! Hope he takes the time and speaks at High schools...teens today need a positive role model....and Lindsey Lohan ain't it!!

Good idea Steve, looking forward to it. Andi you would find at least one 'streamer at Davis-Monthan Famcamp right now.

Like the idea a lot. Won't rejoin the WBCCI to do it though. Hopefully won't have to.

Janet works fast, the group is available for joining.
Don't worry cooper, no affiliation with any of the other clubs. This is strictly for the veterans to enjoy.

Steve,
It's now Staff Sergeant Guinta not Specialist. I believe he was a SPC at the time of his heroic action.

Mark,
I am well aware that he is now a SSG. His MOH citation was awarded as a SPC.

Great Idea, can do...
Steve, all,
Would like to join in helping vets and qualified with finding military camps, or a lay up while in our San Diego area. From Pendleton north to Yuma in the east, there are a number of options.
Bravo Zulu in getting this set up...

Anyone have thoughts on the situation with the Korean penninsula? I doubt the North would attack the US carrier group that will be in training exercises.

Having spent eight years of my life in Korea, my thoughts on the North is that it is like dealing with a juvenile delinquent on crack. Crazy, unpredictable, and if you beat the hell out of them it's going to hurt you more than it does them in the long term. The North has always pushed the envelope to gain concessions, and we have always been there to hold the South back from doing something they would regret. This is not the first instance of the North really doing something that would normally effect a retalliation, e.g. an infiltration team to assasinate then South Korean President Pak Chung Hee, the axe murders of two American Army officers (Barrett and Bonifas) in the DMZ in 1976, the Rangoon Bombing that wiped out numerous South Korean officials, the most recent torpedo of the South Korean ship......the list is quite long. But, the fact is that there are 15 million residents in Seoul.....35 miles from the DMZ and well within artillery range of the North. It would be like a bombardment of Manhattan. Does the South really want to risk the North doing something as stupid as striking Seoul......but, stupid is as stupid does.
I think that this is more of a power play, along with the recent revelations of Nuke weapons capability, to bolster (using convoluted logic) the North's position of being a world power. They are about to have another regime change, with Kim Chong-Il handing over the reins to his youngest son......there is little known about him, but probably the nut doesn't fall far from the tree. The North may be trying to project an image of power to prevent any thoughts of weakness during the regime handoff. And, they may be trying to keep the fear alive among the North Korean populace that the U.S. and South Koreans are the aggressors and the only way to remain safe is through loyalty to the next leader (we've already had the Great Leader and the Dear Leader....who knows what they next one will be called). Other governments, including our own, have used perceived threats as diversionary tactics to justify policy.
In the end, we can only hope this is another round of saber rattling and things will return to the absurd that is normal on this peninsula. I expended a lot of my brain cells trying to second guess those crazies in the North......and, I don't think any logical and sane person can do that. I mean how do you deal with a government that has it's kindergarteners marching to patriot songs that deal with the dismenberment of an American soldier???

With a son at the pointy end of the spear flying missions in an airplane that is as old as his old man, this one has me nervous. I believe the North has calculated that we do not want to be involved in three conflicts at the same time and they are pushing the envelope a little further this time. I am not sure how our current leaders will react to further provocation.

I saw an Airstream up at the Minot FamCamp last summer during a visit to see my son and his family. It looked like it had been rode hard and put up wet which means it is not much different than ours. It also looked like it had been there for a while. Ilook forward to getting ours on the rode next summer.
Has anyone been to Great Pond in Maine? It is run by the Navy. It used to be called Dow Pines when the Air Force ran it years ago. What a great place. You are way off the beaten path so take plenty of provisions. We had water and electric for our old cab over camper and parked in the woods across from a boat ramp. We were there after labor day. There were a few folks there over the weekend but on Monday, Gaby and I were the only ones on the lake. It was awesome!

Is this group also open to those who have served in foreign military branches? For example, the British Army?

There is a 25' at the SEABEE base in Gulfport, MS - been there for over a year, I think it's the camp host. In Key West last month there were 3 Airstreams at the RV park at one Navy base there. Stopped by, thought it was a rally but these guys had not even talked to on another.
Cool group, I'm off to the great sand pit in 3 weeks.
