Good pic! If you put on a few pounds, may have to let the top down, add a snatch block up top and get you a parachute harness.

Let me know if I can provide any info or help in any way...I'm curious to see how your project progresses. I envy your enthusiasm. I used to turn everything into a project whether it needed or not. These days, I just want to wrap up the projects I already have going on, put the toys I've built/accumulated to good use and just chill. I don't know how many big builds I have left in me so I'm trying to be a little more selective and particular than I used to be when blindly stumbling into them. Heck, just freshening up and adding a few little tweaks to this PA had turned into an ordeal. All my projects are competing for my attention...and none of them have really being doing too good lately...and the Vette hasn't helped in that respect. You are going to need some serious momentum...as well as, sustained momentum.

Choke me, beat me, slap me...give me a big-ass trailer project! I kind of feel slightly exhausted just thinking about your project.

Z,
There is a new forum member who lives in Collins and has ordered a 2015 Classic. He will take delivery of his trailer in October. We need to be thinking of a Paul B. Johnson or Timberlake or LeFleur's Bluff rally- with motorcycles-

Do you have a 2014 Gold Wing Valkyrie yet?
I was sad to see that bike go, and now I'm glad to see it come back...

What are the odds?

A Pan America...(which narrows the field considerably).
A blue Corvette...
Multiple motorcycles...(as one is never enough)...

Based on the similarities and repeating theme, I guess it's safe to assume you are stunningly handsome, too.

Both Pan-Am's are 09 models too. Of course, I don't know how many years they were made.

To be perfectly honest...unless your design is tight and requires it, the dinette seating arrangement isn't all that great. It looked awesome in all the Airstream brochures (what doesn't) but in use, it's kind of gimmicky. It will get the job done but its a half-fast bed (lots of un-even cushions piece-milled together to form a mattress) and a half-fast seating arrangement. If yours doesn't have to be a sleeper, I'm sure you could design something better. The corner bolster/cushion is a little weird. It kind of crowds you when sitting and has no place on the bed...so have to find some place to stash it when its a bed.

If just looking for general dimensions, the base is 6' 1" long on the long side of the "L" and 3' 3" long on the short side of the "L" (measuring next to the walls). The seating portion of the long side of the "L" is 24" wide....the short leg of the "L" is 23" wide.

That project ought to keep you off the streets for a spell.

Boy...that M.Hony is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help a brother out. I may have to get you to explain to him that if the bet is sufficient, the Vette will fit in the Pan America....which also may involve the "2x4" approach. It won't be a cheap bet that gets it in there....like a six pack, but come to think of it, a couple of cases could possibly do the trick.

Z
I like your irony.... here's a variation.
Never start VAST projects with Half-Vast plans.

(on edit - did I just describe every "full monte" ever done?)

Can fit three dirt bikes nicely and another two in back of truck if needed. Also fit a lot of camping supply's between bikes. I have two cots we setup in garage that we setup after bike are unloaded to make garge into a separated bedrooms for kids or extra riding buddy's works out great for me. Biggest problem so far is back of trailer has very little ground clearance and drags very easy.

You could swap out the original axles that have 22 1/2 degree torsion arms for versions with 32 degree arms. We have done this on a number of client trailers in order to add ground clearance. The load rating can be raised as well if you're pushing the limits of the original rating.

That is outstanding information and my first time seeing it. Thanks, Colin.

Based on Pedecanada's pictures, he is more likely to find un-level surfaces in order to get to good dirt bike territory. I've gone to 16" wheels which gave me a little lift but Colin has provided good alternative info in the event it is not enough.

There is no replacement for experience and dealing with Airstreams is no exception. That's what I like about this forum...I learn the answers to questions that I haven't thought to ask yet.

I should not be pushing the load rating with just bike and gear would I? The most I would put back there would be 1200-1500 pounds. Thanks for any help. Most times it like 750 pounds and trailer seems to tow better with more weight in back. Don't get me wrong it tows great all the time.

I would think you could haul 1,600# of stuff in the garage of a PanAmerica by the Airstream advertising showing 2 Harley full dressers in there.

Check the tag on the streetside front of the trailer for the dry (unladen) weight & the GVW (gross vehicle weight). They also include the axle load rating. Given that this trailer was considered a "toy hauler", they should have allowed a pretty good payload, but you never know with Airstream. The other models often have far lower payload capacities than what many people put in them.

I think the post office saying "if it fits in, it ships" may not apply to the Airstream toy hauler....

In my Post No. 49....un-laden weight...7,468 lbs...GVWR...11,500 lbs. Airstream literature indicates 3,000 lbs. payload in the garage. It would be hard to put 3,000 lbs. of motorcycles in there but there is plenty of room to put other stuff along side of them (1/2 a cord of firewood, 20 cases of bottled water, Country Girl Cast Iron Cooking Collection, etc.).

Airstream geared (went over-board on) the tongue weight just in case someone took them up on the weight in the garage (possibly at the very aft end). Without anything in the garage, I'm a little over 1,400 lbs. on the tongue so counter-balance in the back is a luxury. I have done my best at adding as little weight as possible on the tongue-side of the axles. There is only one outside storage compartments on the exterior of the trailer near the front of the trailer and it will not contain anything of significant mass. Anything of any weight will go in the garage near the axles. Likewise, I won't be hauling anything heavy toward the rear of the garage just due to the distance from the rear axle. Just common sense stuff, as I see it.

It's a big boy and you have to be a little more selective in various situation but on the road, it tows like a dream and unbelievable how much more stopping power it has with an extra braking axle. The first time I hooked to it, I had to cut the voltage in half from where I normally had it set for the Classic 30 and the 28' Signature. Between the length of the trailer and the 3P hitch, it's a smooth, straight-pulling rig out on the road. It's not nearly as labor intensive on me or my TV as I had imagined. If I had to describe towing it in two words, those words would be "laminar flow".

Pedecanada,

On a totally unrelated note, do you have the retractable bug screen on your cargo door in your PA?

I ask because as soon as I got the trailer, I ordered the "kit" from Airstream ($700). Well, it finally arrived today drop-shipped from several sources...naturally with no paperwork or a clue of what's what. I'm usually pretty fair at figuring things out but the only reference I have is a fuzzy pic off the net. Some of the piece/parts don't make sense as delivered. I am just looking for some reference pics to make sure I'm approaching this project in the correct manner. I'm not seeing how I can install this stuff without ending up with some hefty gaps at the top defeating the purpose of the whole intent. If you have the bug screen, could you post a pic or three? Thanks.

I do not have the rear screen on my trailer but wish I did. I also was going to order one but sounded like it would be a long wait to receive one and nobody could explain to me how hard it would be to install. Could you post some pics of parts and do you have to take rear door frame off to install.
