Victoria's Secret - African Caravan 1959
I recently discovered this picture taken on the African Caravan in 1959.
This picture was taken in the Ituri Forest, Belgian Congo, with pygmies.
There is no doubt that this was an uplifiting experience.

One of the "ladies" has a pick in her hair. Was this an early fashion statement in 1959?

It's so sad they all appear malnourished. Food is scarce in other parts of the world.

In 1959 there was an abundance of game in the Ituri forest. The pygmies were adept hunters. Food was not a problem, but a balance diet was probably a root to their appearance.

Photo reminds me of a story a friend of mine told me. He travels to Ecuador and studies the Zapara tribe of Indians (really – really small and remote group). Once he asked a group of them if he could take their picture. They immediately took off all of their cloths and lined up for him.
Struck me as a uniquely honest moment.
