'Trailer Travel Here and Abroad' by Wally B.

I just picked up a copy off eBay. I'm hoping it's a good read. Can anyone offer reviews?

I have a copy and really enjoyed reading it.Gives you an appreciation of the early days of RVing and some of the challenges that were faced on the early caravans. It also gives some insight on what type of man Wally was.

Trailer Travel: Here and Abroad

I've read it and really enjoyed it! I'm with Mike...it gives insight into what Wally and the caravans were really like.

I just borrowed a copy of "Capetown to Cairo" by Lillie Douglass...hope to get into it this weekend...or very soon. When I'm done with that, I'll be trading it in for "Thank You Marco Polo" by McGregor Smith Jr. the story of the around the world caravan...

Smile Wally Byam in Words

Wally wrote three books. "Fifth Avenue on Wheels", twice and "Travel Trailer Here and Abroad. He felt that he should share his views on using Airstreams.

It would be great if these books plus "Capetown to Cairo" and "Thank you Marco Polo" could be republished for all of the current Airstream lovers.

I was just wondering if their copyrights have expired and are now in the public domain.

PeeWee ~

Are the two books you show of "Fifth Avenue on Wheels" the same writings just two printings/editions or are they different writings with different info?

Bill,

I have those in my library also.

They are great reading.

Airstream should see if they can obtain the rights on all of the books that are out of print. Reprinting might be costly. There are others. When I unpack my library I will jacket copy the front of the books and post.

I think that they are public domain. However, Wally's writings may belong to Airstream or possibly the family.

I always assumed it's because of the fancy 5th Avenue apartments in New York and Wally's concept of taking one on the road ~ no? Our Airstreams are like those fancy apartments...

Shari
Shari,

Great answer, mostly correct.

Neil Vanderbilt Jr., Wally's close freind, lived in the Vanderbilt Mansion on 5th Avenue.

I enjoyed "Trailer Travel". It was a great glimpse into the past experiences of the Caravans. I was impressed that Wally even cannibalized his own trailer for parts to fix others in the group when needed. And it was interesting to read Wally's own advice on trailering.

I've been looking for the "Fifth Avenue on Wheels" but have had a hard time finding it through the out-of-print sources. It really would be nice of these books could be reprinted.

Copyright

PeeWee,

Do you know who holds the copyright to Trailer Travel Here and Abroad or to any other Wally Byam/Airstream books, such as Capetown to Cairo, Thank You Marco Polo and Fifth Avenue on Wheels?

Bill,

I really don't know. Wally's books were probably property of Airstream. They may have been part of his estate left to his wife Stel. But Airstream seems like a better bet.

As far as the other books written by individuals. They are probably held by the different author's descendents. Etta Payne wrote two books, Lilian Douglas wrote one, and another writier wrote the book for the Around-the-World Caravan.

It might behove someone to check into the copyrights. The question that needs to be asked is how large is the market, and what costs are involved?

I will have to find a way to check on the copyright holders.

Howdy! Any luck on this? I agree that it would be really great to reprint them. I have not seen any.
