I learned an interesting thing about the red numbers. In the early days, the numbers were issued new for each caravan. So say for instance you went on the first caravan to Mexico and points south and your number was 34. Well in the next caravan that number might be given to someone else. It was not until later on that the numbers stayed with the members. I learned this from a resent conversation with Pee Wee. I was going to ask when the numbers were given permanently to members, but got side tracked. Maybe Pee Wee will tell us. Pee Wee was interviewed on the most resent Vintage Airstream Podcast , and it makes for some excellent listening. Here is a link for those interested:

Assignment of Red Numbers

THe WBCCI was formed in August 1955. Up until that point there had been numbers issued to idenify trailers on Caravans. Numbers were issued to all members of the Caravan, that included non-Airstream owners.

After the formation of the Club, the numbers were controlled and were issued by Headquarters (Helen Byam Schwamborn) to Airstream owners only.

For a period of time several numbers were duplicates. As time went by this changed.

THe most unusal number was Andy Anderson's. Andy a dear friend of Wally's had double zero "00". Andy also became an International President. Andy was also on the first Caravan in 1951, where I met Andy and Dell (wife). Andy went on a Cuban Caravan, and was on the 1956 European Caravan.

Andy was Danish and was so proud to show us Denmark when the Caravan toured his native land.

Here is a picture of Wally and Andy having fun.

What a coincidence. If I am correct I have been in this trailer in Wimberley. I had just gotten my Trade Wind and saw the owner in his yard preparing for a trip. He gave me a tour and the first advice from another Airstreamer, "Son, they all leak."

The people who owned my As from the US were George and Barbara Gruntler, NY
and yes, she does leak. I found damp spots on the floor in the bathroom, from around the window, and also in the bedroom, again around the window. The back right side.
When the warm weather gets here, I will be out with my trusty caulking gun to fix and repair.
