Wink Help me identify my 1956 Airstream please!

hello everyone! I'm new to the site and new to the Airstream world but I have one that I would like to know more about. I took some photos and I believe I have a 22' Safari. Although, there is the word "TROOPER" painted on the side of the trailer to the right of the door. The floor layout matches the layout of a Safari I saw at vintageairstream.com. I'm just curious if anyone is familiar with the "TROOPER" part? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much and have a good one!

Doesn't really matter, it is a late 1955 Safari which was either sold after the 1956's came out or in 1956. Or, RJ's site could be wrong with the ending serial numbers. Exact records are hard to locate.

Oh ok, thank you! I've also read that exact records are hard to find and that some of the Airstreams have been modified during that time. Do you have any tips on where I should start to find out how much I should be asking for this Airstream?

Start with RJ's site, there is a section on condition and price. The information is not current, but it is a starting point. The other thing is to contact an AirForums member near you to review the trailer. There is a list of volunteer inspectors.

I would be very interested in talking to you about this trailer. I own two 54's with the same layout.

Hi Ravyn1711 - welcome to the Forums!

Let's walk you through the link Bill gave in post #2. Sample VINs for that year are in the upper left corner of the page -- they say a VIN in the range of O6136 to O6299 would match for a 1955 22' Safari. That is not to say that Airstream produced 163 Safaris that year (only that this VIN range was set aside). 1955 Airstreams might have begun production by June 1954 (others may have better info on this). Your numerical 6223 number probably was fairly far through the 1955 model production -- so maybe actually occurred in early 1955. And then 1956 production began in maybe June 1955. And 1956 Safaris would have a VIN beginning O6300 or higher. My take on this? A mistake was made in assigning year for your title somewhere along the line. The ultimate owner could take this through a perhaps tedious process of having the title changed.

Bill's link actually has photos of 4 (5?) different '55 Safaris. Note the different folders above the photos in the left column.

You've been referred to the maybe not up-to-date pricing at Price vs. Condition - Airstream Values. Try to compare photos in the folders above with your Airstream to come to some judgement of condition ('As Found,' 'Average,' 'Restored'). Are the interior furnishings original? Never painted over? Are the irreplaceable cabinet latches still there? This could end up being a huge project (low value) or jewel in the rough -- and the price could swing widely.

It could very well be titled as a 1956, but it was definately built prior to '56 (note the front window). Often times the trailers were titled in the year they that were sold as new. Since the production number suggests that it was built late in 1955, it may not have been sold until 1956.
