Etta Payne - A Classic and Rare Photo

All but nine rigs, and the three aux vehicles went by rail to Wadi Halfa. The ones that crossed the Nubian desert had an adventure of sand, getting stuck and hard work.

Etta and Oscar Payne were seasoned Caravanners and they had no problem in deciding to go across the desert.

This picture show Etta pushing an Airstream through the sand.

I love all the old pics - even those I've found of my grandparents airstream adventures... All the women in skirts or dresses. On my upcoming trip for Thanksgiving, I considered making that a requirement but I don't think I'll be able to relax in the spirit I'm inclined while wearing a skirt! Well - without a bit too much exposure.

Looking at these old pictures from Africa, it is amazing that even in the toughest of conditions, the women still wore dresses. Etta and Oscar were such a great couple, great Caravanners, and good friends of Wally and my Mothers. (As well as my good friends.) Getting to know them was a special experience. First on the 1956 European Caravan, and then on the 1959 African Caravan. Then to see them extend their African experience to Moscow and India.

In these troubled times Etta and Oscar represent the best in Airstream owners, Club members, and Caravanners.

PeeWee,

Do you know the identity of the woman in the background?

The lady in the background is Genevieve Christie. She and her huband Don lived in Carmel, IN. Their trailer number was 1986

The Paynes trailer number was 195.

Looks to me like she's ticked off at her spouse and is trying to count to 10 as slowly as possible.

I, um, "recognize" this pose.

I hate to do this, but the Payne's trailer was 165. Pee Wee must have made a typo.

165 is correct. It is on their trailer, in all directories, and rosters...a whoops. Typos, typos, typos.

Thanks for posting PeeWee. Love these old photos that show a Caravanner's struggle and toil, all the while, enjoying the adventure and looking forward to tomorrow.

It would be wonderful if Etta's books, plus all of the other books about the early days of caravanning that are long out of print such as Capetown to Cairo, Thank you Marco Polo, Retire to Adventure, Fifth Avenune on Wheels, etc. could be reprinted, or made available as a PDF document. I'm sure that there are many who would love to read those books.

Brad,

Only a few of the Caravanners went across the desert. As you can see from the picture at times it was extreme in the sand. Because it was winter, heat wasn't a factor. Only sand.

The three aux vehicles went across the desert to support the Caravanners.

Like a classroom where more effort is put into the class, those that went across the desert had a gold star next to their names for the additional, toil, time and trouble.

Etta and Oscar never passed on a chance to go the extra mile.

I might get called out for being negative... but seeing these photos and reading PeeWee's accompanying tales makes me wonder why today, the club focuses on traveling to full hook-up convention facilities rather than opportunities to seek out experiences that inspire memories of a lifetime.

I think we should all print a copy of this photo... so that we call pull it out each time the going gets a little tough.
