1960s Airstreram Literature

I felt that this might get lost under the "Bambi" entry. I feel that history buff need to see this literature.

Wally's wife Stel had this originally, see her signature top right.

Items like this are just a treasure. It would nice if one day an Airstream Museum could be built close to Jackson Center, maybe with private funds, like the Corvette Museum thats across from the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY. Who knows, one day..........so we all could see

In the 50's and 60's the fiberglass department and design was under the direction of Marius Hansen.

The Mercedes belonged to Marius.

Wally lived on Roseview Avenue from the late 40's or early 50's until his death in 1962.

Catty-cornered from Wally's home was a short lane. The second house down is where Marius and Helga Hansen lived. When I visited Wally and Stel I also took time to visit the Hansen's.

Marius and Helga were from Denmark.

Just a side on the Mercedes, and some info about Airstream.

Great brochure! The trailer looks like it has been polished, but as I understand it they came from the factory with the mill finish on the aluminum.

Also shows how we have gotten more conservative over the years about tow vehicle requirements. I doubt Mercedes designed that car to tow anything.

Nevertheless, our cousin Bob, who bought our Pacer in 1962, towed it behind a Mercedes 190D sedan for several years! I'm sure the rig didn't have much acceleration, and probably not enough stability, but he never had any trouble with it.

Airstream Aluminum and the Factory Finish

For those interested go to this website.

Airstream Aluminum - Pee Wee Schwamborn

Find my discussion about the aluminum finish. You will find why the Bambi in the picture is shiney, it is not from polishing. I purchased material from Kaiser Aluminum.

Best to all readers.
