Yeti Coolers

I am looking at purchasing a Yeti cooler and was wondering if anyone owned one and if so how do you think it performs. Also what would be the best size to buy.

I don't own one but see a lot in the stores these days. Pretty pricey, so not something I'd want to be leaving out under the awning at night!

They do look very well made - as they should for the $$

What I like to use is the 12v/110v electric ones - Koolatron and others - they work quite well. I use it is me "beer fridge" to keep "Mrs Wingeezer" happy as the fridge in teh trair is then not half-filled with beer!

I am on my second one though - I left the first one out in a rainstorm (Maybe I had consumed too much of the contents) and it screwed up the electronics beyond repair - at least not by me!

I did try dismantling it to see if I could save it by drying out the circuit board etc., , but no luck! Of course it can also be used with freezer packs. Cost me about $100 as I recall.

I have a new one now and will be more careful!

There are "copycat" brands out which compare very favorably and cost $100 less.

While at a rally in Rockport in a very upscale RV park, a neighboring Airstreamer had two Yeti's chained to the tongue of his trailer but during the night someone managed to cut the chain and steal them both. Local police said that although Rockport has a low crime rate, that Yeti coolers are delicious targets for thieves.

I use cheap Igloos and Colemans and have never had one stolen and I've never even locked or chained them down.

Yes, once they are cool. In other words. First batch of ice goes to cooling the cooler down. Then. Will hold ice well. Also very durable, for us the was a big draw. We live on the water full time and use the ice chest on the boat, dock, our airstream. They hold up to abuse well. Long story but, I had an 85 quart survive an EF4 tornado.

I only have the Yeti 20 oz cooler for drinks.

I have tried at least 6 other brands with the same claims as a Yeti.

The Yeti keeps the drinks colder (or hotter) longer than the $10 models.

I was too cheap to buy a Yeti ($40 then, a gift) but I would buy a replacement in a heartbeat.

I received the soft sided Yeti (rectangular one) for Christmas. It's really nice and well constructed. I just don't have a reference point to compare it against.

Both the Yeti and Pelican coolers perform better than the standard coolers, and you pay more for the performance. I believe that Yeti's are made in the Philippines, while Pelican coolers are made in the USA IMO. Some reviews prefer the latches on the Pelican line:

We have the 65qt and absolutely love it! We wrestled with the purchase a couple of years ago but every time we use it we are happy we spent the money.

We used to constantly replenish ice and chase the shade in the hot southern California summers, but now with proper planning we can pack it for the week and never worry about food spoiling.

Sometimes I do think a little bigger would be good but we are able to make the 65 work for 4 to 6 people for a week.

I have some pelican products (gun cases) and those things are first rate. I'd guess their coolers are as well.

I have the Yeti "Roadie" cooler. They are very durable, very heavy, and very expensive. I lock it in the bed of the truck. We use it primarily with dry ice as a "freezer" for longer trips. I would suggest you check out www.thewirecutter.com for their article on coolers. I bought their recommended cooler and am very happy with it. I do not lock it.

Here is a thread I wrote from last year on our 10 day trip to Yellowstone, and how we used 2 Yetis to feed a family of 4 for a 10 day trip.

We have been very satisfied. We have a 45 and and 105 and both are sized to so they fit in the bed of our truck (Tundra) and are not higher than the sides. So they would fit if a bed cover was used.

FYI -- FWIW

PS -- The main difference I can see is that the Pelican line mostly has mechanical latches, and the Yeti has rubber latches which require more strength to operate IMO. With DW's arthritis, a simple mechanical latch seems easier to use IMO.

They are amazing. Sam uses one on her guiding trips and ice lasts for days. The hard sided ones and certified bear-proof when you add a couple of locks or bolts in the provided holes.

She just got one of the soft sided ones a couple of weeks ago. Not as good as the hard one, but still very good and easier to carry around. That one isn't bear proof.

I have the pelican also I mostly bought it because of the latch versus the rubber locks on most all the other ice chests. It works as well as the yeti and others from what I’ve seen.
