Treat Yourself
Now you went and did it. This is a discussion Janet and I have all the time, she wants plastic plates, square ones. I do not care for plastic dishes, it's a yuk factor or me. So we compromise with Corelle. I figure, if you're out "roughing it" by camping in the wilds, you should treat yourself to the best. Trailer, People, Food and Dishes, that is as close to the life of luxury I will ever get, so weight be damned on with the fine table service.

Not plastic sweetie, vintage melamine to match the trailer..... and square to fit better in cabinets.

We have 12 settings of Florence "Prolon". Also have the serving bowl, platter, cream and sugar set.
I think the color and design fit the vintage.

A nice set of custom STONEWARE. I know the weight thingy might be an issue, but.... never liked eating off of plastic. Never broke any in 40,000+ miles of blue water sailing, so... we'll see!!
Oh yeah... we made them in our studio, so the price was right !!
cheers, Jeff

Same here and supplemented with Chinet paper plates/bowls during the hunting season. It makes for easy cleanup.

Great dishes!
So far this thread is going great! ...Shari, I like your Watertown stemware! Markdoane, I like the pattern on your Prolon dinnerware! I forgot to mention in my initial thread that I had also found an electric coffee percolator made by West Bend in Aqua. The design on is minimalistic and it sports a mfg date of 1 65. It works great and is very light weight. I couldn't find matching glasses for the melamine so I got some ThermoServe insulated Raffiaware cups, handled mugs, tea glasses, sherbert bowls, and a pitcher. All on Ebay at very reasonable prices and they all look new! They have color bands around the top edges in retro colors. The best part of course is they don't weigh much either! Let's keep it going now...I know there are more dishware tales from the road to share with each other. Oh Yeah!, I want to apologize for starting a family feud between Janet and hubby... Gary, but sometimes these things just come to a head! Ed

Melamine Dishes
Yeah, I think the melamine in Aqua is great. I have mixed in the Yellow just for contrast color. I also have acquired some Pink and some White if anyone is interested you can let me know. Otherwise I may just Ebay them again! Ed

Looks like melamine and Corelle are the most popular. Right now I'm using some vintage Homer Laughlin dinnerware in the Harlequin pattern from the 1950s. Tumblers, mugs, and a couple of bowls are melamine raffiaware from the 50s. All work well in a vintage coach. But we also carry heavy duty Chinet type stuff when washing dishes isn't convenient plus a couple of clear plastic stemware goblets circa 2006.

Tribal Spirit-great pattern! We stock an assortment of paper/plastic, whatever is on hand at home when we are heading out. We also have some lime and turquoise melamine-type plates and bowls, when we are really feeling fancy out in the wilderness. I don't like the tipsiness of stemware when we are in camp, so I usually stock those small clear cups for wine or bubbly. Keep it simple. Our first dishes were HEAVY stoneware handcrafted plates from Snow Pottery in northern Minnesota, but they became a pain. Now, I like to use those as servers, steak, hot baked potatoes, and so on. ~G

We're Corelle users too--enough for 8--and we use glass tumblers for drinks. (But not the Reidel--they're too fragile for travel.) Also have some plastic glasses that the kids used to use by the pool. Old but carefree and good for strolling around with.
For flatware, I got a cheap set of stainless at Target. Like the Corelle, nice and light but sturdy
My big weight issue (besides my butt) is my large AllClad LTD saute pan and a cast iron dutch oven I can't live without.
Check out the thread that 2air mentioned or search "Organizing the kitchen".
Lots of good stuff.

Flamingoes!!!
Moosetags, I really like the look of your Flamingo dinnerware! It really holds the A/S theme. I also like the idea of Corelle for hot items and to use in a microwave. We have Corelle with the Iris pattern on them that we plan to carry for that reason. I don't want to carry too much as the lighter the items the more we can haul. Plus I think the Vintage Melamine just looks soooo cool! I have found some aluminum scoop style measuring spoons and am stocking up on paper products too! I would love to find some Aqua handled utensils and some good plastic spoons, forks and knives. I do realise that for butter cutting real steak and pairing knives will be carried so we will put them on the find it list for the trailer. We already have some with aluminum handles so needless to say they will find their way into the trailer. Ed

We have Corelle for everyday -- white with yellow and blue trim. And blue and clear poly 'glassware' for drinking.
We use good stainless flatware -- same as at home.
But then, for special occasions we have two place settings of a delightful wedgwood bone china pattern, two waterford double old-fashioned glasses and two waterford stem balloons.
So we have whatever we might want for whenever we might want it!

Ease of use
For me it is an issue of ease of use. Paper plates, toss 'em out when you are done. Plastic cups, no worries about breakage. I do insist on ceramic coffee cups and regular flatware, however.
I don't want to do a whole lot of dish washing when I am camping.
PS - I bet you guys thought I fell off the face of the earth ! lol.
