In Cincinnati it is Kahn's hot dogs boiled and topped with Cincinnati Style Chili, shredded cheese, onion and mustard (I skip the onions and mustard).
https://www.skylinechili.com/coneys.php

BTW - I also love a regular hot dog on a bun with ketchup. The hot dog can be substituted with either a bratwurst or mettwurst. Lots of German and Italian immigrants in Cincinnati area.

Take a hot og of your choice, split it in half long way with a piece or the casing serving as a hinge the grill it in butter in a skillet. Great!!!

More North American culture: Hot dogs were one of the stars in those drive-in movie concession clips. As a kid, I liked these clips more than the movie (they were usually animated).

p.s. O. Winston Link's classic photo of a drive-in below: Hot Shot Eastbound.

I lived in Cincinnati for ten years. Later when I flew through, I'd try to stop in the food court in B terminal to get a three way and two cheese coneys. (no onions, light mustard)
Sadly, Delta has abandoned CVG.

You haven't lived until you visited a Skyline at 1am near the University. The windows were steamed up, the cook was yelling at the waitress and he had a metal tool on his arm where he could make 10 chess coneys at once!
Gourmet!
Even more sad is how Cincinnati went from a dynamic, vibrant city with a great downtown to an urban center where everyone goes home at 5 pm.

If it's not Skyline then it's grilled Nathan's or Sabrett's with light mustard and sauerkraut.

Boiled Hot Dogs

Tens of millions of hot dogs are boiled/simmered at ballparks and hotdog carts.
Served with a steamed bun and condiments, they have quite a following.

The tendency these days is for all national brands to have turkey or chicken mixes. People are tending to go to "all beef" dogs if they want to keep it real. I think the all beef dogs tend to be harsh, over garlic'd and coarse.

There still are some regional purveyors that make mildly spiced all meat pork, beef and veal blend, often with natural casings. They are fine examples of the German sausage makers art. They are particularly abundant in the "Axis of Weenie"...Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse.

Since you are all travellers, you should sample them as you tour the country.

Hofmann Syracuse (Co-packed in Wisconsin)
Hartmann Canandaigua, (Rochester)
Sahlen Buffalo
Helmhold’s Troy NY
Wardynski Buffalo
Zweigle Rochester
Glazier's Potsdam NY
Hummel Bros. New Haven CT
Grote and Weigel Bloomfield CT
Thumann New Jersey
Dietz and Watson Philadelphia
Saugy Rhode Island
Kayem Chelsea MA
Schonland's Kayem Chelsea MA
Essem (Kayem) Boston MA
Shields Portsmouth/Kennebunk
Jordan, Schonland, Kirschner Portland ME (all now Kayem)
Koegel Flint
National Detroit
Greenfield Village Dearborn (Special for Ford)
Dearborn Dearborn
Kowalski Detroit
Winter's Eastpointe MI
Bright Leaf Smithfield NC
Wimmers/Fairbury Nebraska
Farmer John's Dodger Dog LA (Hormel)

Sorry to say there aren't many out west that I know of but feel free to add to the list.

FDR's famous hot dog dinner

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart...ing-180963589/

A sitting British ruler—King George VI–visited an American president—Franklin Delano Roosevelt—on his home turf. The four-day excursion “featured all the staples of a royal visit: a sight-seeing tour of Washington, a formal State Dinner and a big bash at the British Embassy,” writes Jason English for Mental Floss. But there were more casual moments, too: like the picnic where the king had his first-ever hot dog.

Thanks again, Luca, for starting a great thread! I hope you are doing OK in Italy with the Coronavirus.

FYI this month's photo contest is on the theme of "Let's Eat," with SPAM foods starting off the discussion:

Do you have any food/dining photos from your Airstream travels in Europe?

Ciao,

Peter
