Yes! Had one in the 90's and used it a lot until I wore it out. You don't need chemicals to start it unless you want to. Great for just grilling.

Oh there are plenty of other sellers. I just linked you to the one I bought and from who. I liked the 900t cause it had a thermometer.

I ordered one of these over the weekend, and it arrived yesterday.

It is very, very sturdy, and seems quite well made, and made to last....a bit on the heavy side, but very compact, and should be a permanent item that will not need to be replaced.

Reading the instructions....you put a layer of charcoal in each side, then 3-4 into the Ash Drawer, the latter of which serve as the lighting mechanism for the briquettes in the trays.

Only the few in the Ash Drawer get a little lighter fluid, so none on the coals that cook your food....you fold it up, light the starter briquettes, and are ready to grill in about 10 minutes.

I will try it out when it stops raining.

I cheated and had a little bag of the "instant light" type briquettes that I used for the 4 in the ash drawer. Regular or mesquite under the grills...

That's an idea, and would keep from having to carry lighter fluid.

Works as advertised

First use, a very small learning curve later...

These are boneless chicken thighs, I also did a piece of boneless sirloin.

Delicious, and couldn't have been simpler.

You couldn't feed a crowd with this baby, but it is very functional for one or two, and delightfully compact.

Folded up and in its pouch, it will fit nicely into the narrow space behind the driver's seat of the Interstate.

Thanks for the update and photo. It looks like you can raise each side grill higher, and slip them into those slots on the verticals? Is only one edge of each grill held up this way, so that a heavy steak might be problematic at the higher levels?

Thanks,

Peter

Two slots are at the insert end of each grill piece, and they fit very securely.

If on the lower level, the other ends rests on the inserted ends of the legs, that protrude into the grill area, so it is all very stable...you could probably even put a small Dutch Oven on a grill, if you just wanted to heat something.

I don't know why you would cook a steak 4" or so above the coals, as I don't believe it would cook.

There is only a single layer of coals, and these grills are intended for relatively thin cuts of meat or fish.

I cooked my 1/2" or so thick sirloin on the lowest level.

I'm impressed with this....its sturdy construction and its compact nature.

Thanks that all makes good sense! Being able to raise each side is something that was not clear before, and is a real "plus" for this grill IMO, to keep things warm after an initial char.

I had something quite similar to that in the late 70's. The grills were round though and mounted on a threaded central post so they were infinitely height adjustable. I set a picnic table on fire while using it in chimney mode. bits of coals fell out onto the picnic table. Otherwise it worked like a charm. Rust eventually got to it and they were no longer available. Yours looks good.

We loved our Hibachi to death (rust) years ago, too. What you have on that grill looks mighty good, Maggie!

Hi Susan!

It is recommended to close the grill up for a bit after removing food, to clean the grills, which I did for a half hour or so.

Tho still quite warm, I then tucked it into the snuff-out pouch, and brought it inside.

It's grilling season coming up again! Sorry to necro this thread but I'm looking at getting one of these and thinking about using this in conjunction with some sous vide cooked meats. I'm thinking I can get the beautiful texture and succulent meats then blast them on the son of hibachi to make them pretty

I'll let you know how it goes!

I really like mine, and especially its compact nature and fold-up ability.

I have only done basic grilling, sometimes using just one side, but it’s a great little item for a small space.

Wondering if this neat little grill is still onboard after you switched vehicles, and whether you are happy with it? Maybe you have been too busy to use it this season?

Thanks,

Peter

When we had the Scamp, which had no oven; I used a Cobb Cooker as an oven, and for BBQ (low and slow). 6 charcoal briquettes would provide 350 degrees for long enough to bake brownies, 8 or 9 briquettes would provide 400 to 425 for baking a pizza or bread. Since our Airstream has an oven, And I now have a pickup box to carry things, I take my charcoal fired Weber Go Anywhere Grill. I still take the Cobb, because it is under the dinette table where it belongs.

I of course still have this little grill, and used it a number of times last year...I don’t think even once this year, but it’s been kind of an odd year overall and I have also been on an extended not-feeling-like-cooking jag.

Goes hand in hand with not having much appetite.

I have found using just one side to be good for just me, and when I do that I make a little pile of briquettes there and light them rather than folding it up.
