Lodge skillet

I had a lodge slillet in our pantry for years that was extremely rusty. So today after my wife threaten to throw it out I took the time to clean it. After soaking it in vinegar and water then washing it out with mild soap all the rust was gone. I just reseasoned it and baked it in the oven for 50 minutes. Now it looks as good as new and ready for the road.

Good for you!

There's nothing like cast iron.

Awesome.

If you are ever traveling through Kansas City you might enjoy touring the Steamboat Arabia museum. It is a museum that houses the story and items that were aboard a steamboat that was on the Missouri River that sank, and was underwater about 100 years.

A private group raised the funds to recover the boat, restore it, and has this museum showing how they did this. Also shows all parts of the boat, and the artifacts that were recovered. Among these are many cast iron items that were literally under water and mud for a century.

Amazing stuff.

You never throw out cast iron cookware. Unless it is cracked. I clean cruddy pieces with an electrolysis tank. Cast iron is a bit of a pain, but it rocks.

I use nothing but cast iron, both at home and camping.

Thanks urnmor for the suggestions. The following thread also has good ideas on cast iron cookware:

My dad used to build a fire in the backyard and put the cast iron skillets in it. I remember those things getting cherry red, burning off everything. He'd cool them off, re-season and they were good for another 10 years. My baby brother still has them and they look the same as they did 50 years ago. They must be 80 years old, or more.
