Aeropress is a great alternative
We have used our Aeropress for 10 years in our International and we love it. We endorse Aeropress to the extent that we gift them routinely for birthdays and Christmas and they love them.

I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...TF8&th=1&psc=1
For one mug's worth, I start the brewing time just as it's beginning to perc to 6 - 7 mins. Yields a great cuppa!

The Fellow Stagg pour over makes great coffee. We have the XF, which holds about 600 ml/20 oz. Aeropress is also quite good. The key (said another fledgling coffee snob ) is the ratio of freshly ground coffee to water. Nope, I don’t weigh or measure while camping — I know what 30 or so grams of coffee looks like, and the Fellow Stagg kit comes with an idiot proof measure that was purpose built for folks like me!
Really good coffee beans help, too

Anything and everything, and we've tried it all. Think about how you really like your coffee and follow your heart. We had non electric drip...nope, coffee was always too cold. Tried a low powered machine, with that one the guy who designed the pot was a sadist who just wanted to see counters covered with hot coffee. Then invested in a nice, thermal French Press...another nope, we had coffee grounds absolutely everywhere.
After much trial and error we have 2 systems onboard. A mini Keurig that we use when we are plugged in, no reservoir -no frills and it fits in a lower narrow cupboard perfectly. https://a.co/d/ijhzUsN
Second choice is for boon docking and we have an Aeropress Travel. One cup at a time, packs down small. Works as a French press...but the clean up is so much easier than a regular press, it compresses the grounds into little cakes you can just wipe off and away. https://a.co/d/9Cn76Ez

Cannot recommend Aeropress coffee makers, makes a great cup of coffee and there is absolutely NO MESS, just push the filter and grounds into the garbage can and you are good to go. No remaining coffee grounds to mess up your sink. https://aeropress.com/

At home, beans from a local roaster, Nuovo Simonelli burr grinder with a doser, and a Nuovo Simonelli Oscar II espresso machine. Bodum double wall mugs.
On the road, we had used our Espro french press (dual filter) with stainless teel thermal carafe, which keeps the coffee warm, but we got tired of cleaning it out. Went back to a Melitta paper filter over the Espro carafe. Saves water, easy clean up.

French Press
Shore Power: Electric kettle, French press.
Boondocking: Boil water on stove, French press.
Grind beans before French press.
Dispose of coffee grounds in any nearby natural setting or dumpster.

Like some others, we use a Melita pour-over with paper filters (uses less water to clean than a metal filter).
One of the best things you can do to improve your coffee’s freshness, aside from using good water, is to grind your beans at the time of brewing. This Timemore burr grinder is good for setting grain size and a consistent grind, and since it uses a handle, doesn’t take electricity. A moderately course grind setting is best here.
We love this collapsible kettle for its compact size and customizable temperature settings (good for my wife’s taste in different teas, as well as setting your coffee temp to around 200, which gives better results than boiling it). Note that at altitude (Denver or higher), since it senses just temperature instead of physical state, it will bubble over if boiling water due to the lower boiling temperature point, so keep an eye on it if you’re in the mountains.
Best,
Bill

We use Keurig at home and a single cup dispensing Keurig on the road. No hassle. We grind enough coffee for our planned travel and use reusable cups with filters.

The new Ratio Four looks promising for an on the road single cup automatic pour over. I just received one and have used it at home. It works good so far, and is very compact for travel. Brews direct into a cup.

Coffe Prep Preferences - we use a French press
We’ve used a French press for years. No moving parts, no electricity needed, easy to vary the strength of the cup and easy to clean.

As you can see, coffee is a very serious topic. We grind, aero press or single cup drip and use ember mugs to keep each brewed cup at a specific temp for about an hour +. Good combination.
