I’ve not cooked on a small, but I’ve done decent sized pork roasts and multiple racks of ribs, and a turkey breast in the MX without issue.

Hi
There will *always* be something that is to big for whatever BGE (or set of BGE's .... I have three ...) you happen to have.
The bigger they are (more mass) the better they hold temperature. Also the longer they take to get up to temperature. The taller ones have more temperature delta between top and bottom than the shorter ones. Volume goes up faster than heat loss (odd but true). The bigger ones will hold temperature longer on a load of charcoal than the smaller ones. How long depends on a lot of things ....

Hi
As mentioned earlier in the thread, BGE's really aren't made for bumping around dirt roads. The various internal ceramic bits will bash into each other if you don't pad them a bit in transport. I have broken one this way .... Of course, I've also broken some of the ceramic bits and pieces other ways as well. Dogs running into plate setters leaning against a tree ... not recommended ...

Well, this thing is heavy, really heavy. So no one is going to just pick it up and run off.
I generally run a cable through the handles and secure it to the picnic table or my camper.

The one shown is bolted down to the steel platform at each foot with lock nuts and a threads altered to make it very difficult to remove quickly.

I took a large sponge and cut it into pieces to place around the plate setter as well as under the ceramic insert. 12,000 miles on rough Colorado, Wyoming and Montana roads with no breakage issues.

I have a BGE XL on my deck and absolutely love it. I decided to purchase a mini-max for camping and hauled it around for a year. I loved cooking on it, but I didn't love humping it in and out of my truck. It is now my go to grill at home when I'm grilling for my wife and I. I have not arrived at a charcoal fired solution for on the road. I enjoy my 17" Blackstone and like my Weber Q1200 - just miss the taste of a nice charcoal burnt steak on the road.

Another BGE fan!
VaTravelers, I *wish* I had an XL BGE. I've got a Large and end up using a Weber Genesis for spill-over like veggies.
The MiniMax is tempting but I agree hauling it around would be a challenge. Maybe a custom swing-out mount for a truck like the Harbor Freight crane type on a swivel?
Tried doing a spatchcock chicken which turned out great. Just did three racks of ribs this past weekend...

We use a primo smoker and a weber gas BBQ at home
we use a Weber Q1000 on the road
the ceramic smokers are far too big and heavy for road usage
plus you have to carry the charcoal.
IMHO, save the smoking for home use );

Hi
I have a Large BGE and an XL out on the deck. The Large gets used about 10X as often as the XL. Neither one is remotely suitable for taking camping. To big *and* to fragile. Hit a bunch of potholes and you could easily break this or that on a BGE.

Just purchased a mini max, stand and a few other accessories today. Although it isn’t light, I’m looking forward to getting it out on the road and firing it up.
Thanks to all for the helpful hints about transporting it safely. I’m sure I’ll settle on securing between the side of the truck bed, tailgate, yeti and hope for the best. I will place a few pieces of cardboard between the ceramics or maybe just remove them altogether for transport.

Is anyone doing any type of anti-theft device to secure your mini max while camping at public campgrounds?
I didn’t give it much thought until a neighbor witnessed someone pull up on a golf cart and attempt to steal a cell phone that was briefly left out on a picnic table. Luckily she scared the off guy off.

Hi
We've been camping for many decades. Most of it was in tents. There *is* no "lock it up" feature on a tent. Everything is just out there for anybody to poke at. We never had anything go missing.
Does stuff happen? Sure it does. When it does, that's a really great story to re-tell again and again and again. If it happens to one in a million campers, there's a pretty good chance the story gets re-told at least that many times.
With something as heavy and as weird as a BGE, I would very much not worry about it. At least not in the campsites *I* camp in.
