Wine bottle transport and storage

Hello all,

I've read a few of the threads on wine storage and custom wine racks, shelves, etc. I've seen a few great ideas, but I haven't seen much for newer Airstreams.

My wife and I like to enjoy a nice bottle of wine or two while on the road, and I'd love to see what those of you with similar interests have done to store your wine while camping. I could certainly put it in a container and keep it under the bed or in a cabinet, but I'd much rather have a custom wine rack or shelves to make it easier to access when camping.

Fellow oenophiles, please post pics of your wine storage solution in your Airstream. I'd love to see them.

Cheers!

I have used these successfully, which hold two bottles and can stand in a closet or lay flat almost anywhere.

I would be worried about breakage, carrying in a wine rack, as you can get some serious jostles on the road which might dislodge a bottle or more.

I've got something similar that I've used to transport wine in my carry-on bag in a plane. I'd probably use that when on the road. I was thinking more of something once I've set up camp and plan to be stationary for a few days.

I just pack a bunch of bottles tightly in the sliding cabinet under the dinette in my classic. Nothing has broken so far.

We just use the 'six pack' wine bags from the grocery store and put them in the front storage bin in our 30' FC. That compartment is a perfect size for wine, beer, soda & water. It's not fancy but it works for us.

"Beverages and More" sells wine shipping containers. They are a cardboard box with foam inserts to absorb shock. We have a six pack and two threes.

We have increased the inventory by locating a quantity of bottles in the corner pocket of the bed support. A thick sock on each bottle protects them from shock during travel.

We have also traveled with a standard cardboard 12 bottle case with shock pads under the box and that seems to work.

Worst problem is running out mid trip and having to replenish the inventory with an unknown wine brand/vintage. Nothing like a glass of wine to finish of a good day of travel. Pat

Ultimate airstreams builds these racks... $550. 6 bottles if wine / 4 liquor. Goes in your upper Cabinet.

Have two of the single bottle holders in pantry, and use this if need to carry 6 more if in the boonies. Both from Container Store.

^^^^This. We fill up 2 of them and start out with a case of wine for each extended trip. Put them in the plastic storage containers under our sofa in our 27 FB Globetrotter. No issues over 2 years. The only issue we have is when we are looking for bottle #13 on the road.

A box with bottles standing in the shower in case of accidental breakage. Then on their sides under the sofa when we arrive.

Bota Box. Seriously, for everyday wine, it's not bad. (It's the ONLY decent boxed wine, however. I threw out an entire box of Black Box, so bad.)
Otherwise, a regular wine box with the cardboard inserts works just fine.

The link in wulfraat’s comment shows our airstream. The wine cabinet was designed & installed by Ultimate Airstream & has worked perfectly for us. It pulls out & the bottle dividers can be removed (all or in part) to allow for bigger bottles. The floor is padded & we’ve had no spills or breaks. .

Because the cabinet is beneath the bench seat, the wine stays cool!

4 bottles slide veritcal right in my curbside dinette storage compartment with atlas and game set directly behind dinette seat back by light switch in my 19' Winick. In my former 16' Sport they rode in the rear headboard storage compartment

Wine Next to Shoes

I think the images are self-explanatory.

To get the doors to lay flat for unrestricted access I had to install the flush pulls (I put them on all the floor level lockers) and replace the Euro hinges with leaf hinges—after filling the hinge pockets with plugs cut with a fly cutter go get the right size. Perfect-fitting plugs may be available on the Internet.

The shoe box fits in an aluminum channel frame and is removable.

Wine Bottle Storage

Dennis C
John and Roberta here.

We’re more into Gin-and-Tonics, but we do enjoy our wines. As we’re trailering about with and a 30-foot Flying Cloud, we have that 3-foot hallway closet. At the bottom of the closet, in the rear, is a step, left-right, just the right depth. I screwed a 1x6 plank across the top, snug against three six-pack cartons, the kind you get free at the grocery store to haul home multiple bottles of wine. Now we can carry 18 jugs with a gap that holds another two jugs of gin. Check it out (image attached).

Good looking cabinets. All very nicely done. On the other extreme end, what we have used for multiple years, always left full, returned full, but not the same bottles, capacity, 9 each, total 18, ( don’t fool yourself, 18 doesn’t last long) are a couple plastic milk crates with 1/4” plywood dividers. Rides next to the gennie in the truck bed. You know the crates, they say on the side....Hood. Do not use under.........!
Actually, the discriminating buyer can usually fit a bottle or two of “sipping whiskey”
in the crates as not everyone (me?) drinks wine. When shopping at winery’s along the way, no, not Wal Mart, crates are easily brought to vender to fill before returning to truck with multiple bags.
But I must admit, a wine cooler in the stream would be space consuming, BUT really nice

With a 19 Bambi, and too many toys, weight and space is always a consideration and while I "would never" drink it at home...on the road box wine is more than fine for us. It is easier to stow, easier to dispose of (the box that is...rather than the bottle) and anything tastes better in camp so it works there too.
Plus many "semi-premium" wineries are putting their products in boxes and even cans. Another advantage is the ability to have one, yes...two, glasses and then save the rest til the next day, the oxidation or exposure to air is minimized as opposed to a bottle which you normally need to finish off! Salute

Only the 28 and 30 have that storage bin. It is a great place to put breakables...
