Where are all the Airstreams?

My wife and I purchased our first camper, an 2018 23FB (Scrumpy) in April.

We have camped 5 long weekends and have yet to see an Airstream at any of the campgrounds. (2 in KY, 2 in IN and one in OH). We have stayed at State Parks, a RV park and an Army Corps property that all looked to be full but no Airstreams

Where are you guys at? Any Airstream camping in Kentucky. We are planning our fall travels and would love not to be the only Airstream!

We have had the same experience, it is fun to see other airstramers out there. We will walk around campsites just to see if we can find others.

Ours is in storage for now, until this Covid-19 thing goes away, abates or they come up with a vaccine and some treatments; too dangerous. We have been going to Florida for the winter for several seasons but family matters have kept us at home for a few years. We were planning on going down again when everything (other than us) went south.

We drove from Lexington to Beaverton, OR last year, going through Wyoming. The return trip was the northern route, stopping near Minneapolis to visit my eldest son.

Living close to I-75, I usually see a lot of AS going north and south, but not this year. I drove my 4Runner to southern OK back in May and passed a couple of AS in Texas. Made a solo trip up to Wisconsin and I don't think I saw any, going up or returning.

A lot of campgrounds have closed, so there's fewer places to stay. I don't know if that has changed but since we aren't going anyway, no need to check.

Don't you love to get all the attention to you since you're the only Airstreamer?

Despite the fact that they are building and selling Airstreams as fast as possible, they still comprise a tiny fraction of the new units sold each, and especially this, year.

On one hand, that’s great — there is a certain cachet to traveling in one.

On the other hand, dealers are few and far between. If you need an Airstream specific part or a tech with broad knowledge of the structure, you generally will need to travel and the wait list for service can be daunting.

There is also the price point.

I wonder if the frequency of Airstream sightings has anything to do with geography? We've done most of our camping here in the West with one excursion that took us as far east as Wyoming. There aren't a lot of them, to be sure, but it's not unusual to find another Airstream in the campgrounds we've stayed at. It is fun to connect with other Airstream owners on the road.

I too have noticed both more Airstreams and many more Casitas west of the Mississippi.

I have seen 2 Oliver's since they started being made.

I know Airstream has stopped making the Nest, so that one has now become a Loch Nest Monster - legendary, not extant. Of course they might bring it back next year...

But
No one really tries to compete with Airstream.... why does Airstream think it is a good idea to slap their brand name on a second rate competitor to Scamp, Casita or even Oliver? Maybe they should rebrand it as a THOR Nest while they try to get it right.

We went to look at a pre-owned Airstream in Central Ohio to purchase. On the drive there, we saw a vintage Airstream sitting on some property, and after our visit, while eating lunch, we saw the exact length and model Airstream we had just looked at drive through a rural town square. We took it as a sign! And yes, sent the check yesterday!

I would recommend you join the AS Club (WBCCI). In normal years there would be many rallies to attend. Of course because of Covid-19 most have been cancelled.

But you could come to the Alumilina Rally in NC in Oct. You will see hundreds and hundreds of AS's there!

diabu - we also had a sign. We had looked at a lightly used 27' Globetrotter, then hit the road in our Navion. On the way home, we stayed at a state park in Iowa, and two slots down was a 27' Globetrotter. We knew a sign when we saw it and made the down payment two days after we got home.

My 2002 coach Ruby Lou is a 27 ft Safari LS on RV Traders.
I have had 4900 Views and lots of interest.
Maybe people are afraid to commit to camping right now. They also may not realize the parks are opening across the nation.
