What's in a name?

Airstreams have such wonderful names like the Serenity,Flying Cloud and Bambi. They all promote a sense of peace, relaxation and tranquility. The way I'd like to think camping should be. So what's up with some travel trailer company's giving their trailers aggressive, intimidating and even scary names like the Intruder, Prowler and the Vengeance?

Dave,

We've wondered about that too. I don't feel good when parked between an Intruder and a Prowler. Perhaps someone will come out with a Cannibal or a Vampire next.

I am less likely to talk to those people because you are what you buy.

We have a Safari and we like to travel far and wide.

Good special effects! I'd like to see that at the other end of a campground.

Well, for one thing, they are trying to appeal to a "youth oriented" mentality. Notice the age of some of the owners of these aggressively named models. AS owners are -- generally -- not the segment AS is seeking. Recent attempts at the youth market have focused on more sleek and contemporary design cues: Eddie Bauer, PanAm, and the CCD interior designs. Until these newer models came into existence, I looked at AS as a retirement community product. Nothing about them ever said 'young' in spirit, only "Grand Dad" or "Nanna" is inside. Because of the cost of AS, this segment are often the major buyer's that have the coin and credit to afford 'em! One look at the age of a typical Streamer tells you plenty. Although it's younger, it is not a youth market. AS is not selling to many "kids" -- they have most likely seen recently that the average age of ownership has dropped and the level of formal education has increased from past years. 'Sedate' is what comes to my mind when first seeing a AS -- another is 'Wow!'

The one that cracks me up is the Cougar.

Probably the manufacturer didn't realize that it is slang for an older, predatory type of woman, who hangs out in bars looking for hook-ups with younger men.

Maybe we should make a plaque for the Overlander that renames it the Avenger!? Then we would be young again!

My Ocean Breeze was parked near the Texas coast and has advanced corrosion. Turns out that it is not covered under warranty. So much for the name!

How about naming it "Corroder"?

We like to poke along in the southwest, so we're the "Desert Tortoise".

Great name! I haven't found a name yet that feels just right. I have a 16 ft Bambi Sport. I've thought of Spugy because one of my sisters said it looked like a space bug. Of course there's always Bambina (because I'm a wanna-be Italiano)!
