SUP? Stand Up Paddle Boards

I follow the great thread here on kayaks and Airstreams. Stand up paddleboards are another great way to get on the water and I thought it might be interesting to talk about those. My home town - Bend, Oregon - was just named the #1 SUP spot by Outdoor Magazine: 2014 Travel Awards: Best SUP Getaway | Travel Awards | OutsideOnline.com

I don't know about that as we have an awfully short warm season. But I've been thinking it might be a great way to add a dimension to Streaming. Anyone have any experience SUPing?

I live on Lake Champlain and my wife and I bought SUPs last year. They're pretty easy to get the hang of and will help strengthen your core. I have a bad shoulder and find it more pleasant than my kayak.

Sup

We live in S. California and bought SUP's last year. We have used both in the ocean and in some marinas. Not to tough unless a windy and rough day in the ocean. Takes a little used to getting your balance but what the worst that can happen. you fall in!
Looking forward when I can throw them into my EB27 and head out.
So much fun even my dog enjoys it, hoping to get him in the ocean

I am like a cat - don't like to get wet unless it is a hot day and a nice cool pool or lake is handy.

SUP'g is popular here, even in winter. (They wear wetsuits). Thought you might like this photo. It was taken on a calm, fairly warm winter's day at White Rock Beach. It has an ethereal, walking on water effect....

I really want to try my hands at one this coming summer. I am very tall, so this kind of stuff teens to be difficult for me, but it looks like a ton of fun.

I use my Airstream to camp by the rivers or lakes all the time! SUPing is one of the hottest new sports.

Most people use inflatables to paddle calm lakes but others are running class I-V rivers. There are lots of ways to use your board.

Best to get an inflatable that will roll up and fit into a backpack for easier storage.

One of SUPings best surfers lives in Oregon and catches a one hour wave behind the sternwheeler boat on the Hood River. You can see it on Youtube.

Lots of fun!

I've also thought about getting an inflatable, but it's not looking like we have any spare space in our Interstate. Bummer. And, we'd have to have 2 of them so we could both paddle out.

I've ridden an inflatable before and I really liked it. They're quite rigid when inflated properly, so, just as easy to ride as a standard board. The only thing I noticed was that it was slower.

It does not bother my back.

I've been kayaking a handful of times, and that DOES bother my back. And I used to own a Concept 2 rowing machine, and if I rowed too much or too hard, that would sometimes aggravate my lower back.

You could try Tower Paddle Boards. Best Stand Up Paddle Boards by Tower SUP.

They're based in San Diego, and their prices are great. The inflatable that I tried was a Tower. I have nothing else to compare it to, but, I'd buy one from them if I had room for one. Their model is 6" thick, I believe, whereas some other companies make theirs more like 4" thick. I was told that the added thickness gives it more bouyancy and rigidity. Probably also makes it a bit slower.

I have been into SUP for a couple of years, Great in FL over the winter and on the Columbia when I'm in Hood River, OR in summer. I have 2 inflatables; a Nash One 12'6 touring board and a Slingshot 11'6 all around. They're very rigid and stable when properly inflated, and store easily when deflated.

SUP gives you a great full body work out, especially the core, when you do it properly. You owe it to yourself to get a quick lesson on proper technique and rent one and give it a serious try.

Albert, Remember that I did say that I have not tried any other inflatables. So, do your due diligence! Perhaps the person above that has a Nash can chime in here.

We SUP in our paddle group in Bluffton/hilton head SC.

My wife lives to do stand up paddle board yoga as well. She made me go once..wasn't my thing but I don't like any type of yoga.

I am more of a kayaker but I enjoy to SUP. It can kill your core and knees on a choppy rough day though
