Potluck
What do you put together for the "ok" lets have a potluck? Does anyone plan ahead for a rally? We will be going to our fist rally next month and would like to be --prepared.

Most rallies have some sort of "schedule" that lets you know what the main activities of the rally will be, and most likely there will be at least one pot luck and probably daily happy hours with appetizers, etc. (at least those we've been to)... We plan ahead what we are going to make for the pot luck as well as a couple of appetizers for the happy hours....if there's a "theme" to the rally we try to think of something that fits the bill. It's easiest if it's something that you can make ahead of time and heat up, or something that you can easily put together the day of the pot luck...and that can be "self-served" easily in a pot luck setting...there is always a lot of great food and we are always impressed with peoples' creativity. Have fun with it...that's the most important part! (And oh, be prepared to take your own plates & silverware in case there are no paper plates provided.) We have also found that we really don't prepare a lot of meals for just ourselves...there's usually so much good food that it just keeps feeding everybody.

We either prepare something ahead of time and freeze it, or fix something in the crook pot. This way we can spend more time involving ourselves in activities.

Ask the leader of the group or planner what is expected at a "potluck" within your group and if there is a theme for this rally. Some of the ladies see it as an opportunity to show off their favorite dishes. Some of them overdo it and you end up with a competition and way too much food. The usual suggestion would be bring enough food to serve 5 people. This usually ends up with enough food but not everybody gets a chance to sample everyone elses's creation.
Some of the units, after having much duplication and way too much food, designate by the first letter of the last name, what type of dishes to bring. A-E bring Salads, F-M bring main dishes, O -S bring hot vegatables, T - Z bring desserts. This assignment usually rotate.

Think you should change "ladies" to cooks. The best peach cobbler ever is made by Jim. LOL I rather eat potluck than at the finest 5 star restruant.

rallying
It depends on how many units are expected or that sign up to come, but we usually bring a main dish to share and one side to share (that serves 6-8). So far we have never seen an event where anyone goes hungry. And the food doesn't run out! Our OH crowd usually has a "beanie/weenie" night on Fri. during arrival times, or if lots of firewood is available, we change it to panini night. We bring our own table service and plates, and drinks of choice.
Oh, and Sunday morning we have a community breakfast. Most of the time everyone just brings along table service and a breakfast dish to share with everyone...hash and eggs, stuff to throw into a huge delicious omelette over a campfire, jam and toast, hash browns...etc. You get the idea! Just have fun with it!!! Good luck at your first rally. Let us know how it went and take lots of photos to share with the rest of us!

I may go along with you Danni, but Jim would have prove to me a few more times. I'm not convinced until he shows that he can do it consistently.
I say we put Dacia and Jim up to a Dutch Oven throwdown!!!
Oh Jim....
sempi2,
based on my experience...if your bring good wine, or dessert you'll always be the hit of dinner table.
