Pendleton National park blankets

My wife has always loved Pendelton products and we have lots of blankets, sweaters, etc. She just told me this evening that they have a National Park series of blankets and she wants to collect them as we visit the parks. I visited Pendleton's online store and they are really expensive. Anybody know anything about these? Are they collectable?
Thanks,
Dan

You may find this thread and this website interesting...our very own Fred (47Weewind) Coldwell has written a couple of articles in Airstream Life about them and is a collector.

We have a Pendleton outlet store here in Seaside, Oregon and they have them on sale. Perfect in an Airstream, an American classis, I'm sure the new ones are not collectible but still fun to have some in the trailer for cold nights around the campfire.

Teresa, we've been to the store in Seaside. I just finished reading the article that Shari posted above and they have an amazing history. I had no idea. I guess Wifey has all of the taste in this family. It was her who insisted on the Airstream as well. I was born and grew up in Eugene and sometimes miss the ambiance of this very unique town. My Dad still lives there but he usually likes to visit us. (Something about grandkids).

Kind regards
Dan

How much do these blankets go for and can they be found online at discount?

John, They areexpensive, 200-300 range at the Pendleton outlets. You can sometimes find them on ebay much cheaper.

Pendletons have a great history that goes back to the early days of the National Parks. Some of the originals from the 20's and 30's are collectible as are Navajo rugs from which many of the designs originated. There are new National Park designs being introduced. One of which is the Grand Canyon design created by an old friend of mine Ed Mell. They are expensive but well made and should last for many years.

We visited the Penelton mills IN Pendelton Oregon in the early '70s. It was a very nice tour and the blankets were expensive then too. However, we had our first born with us but we 'splurged' for one of their
'seconds'.

If you want discounted Pendletons, hit pawnshops near Indian Reservations. These blankets are often given as gifts or for ceremonial use, and often end up in the pawnshop in brand new condition for huge discounts. Gallup is one place where you may find this if you are doing a Route 66 trip. Dont buy Navajo Rugs, what you pay $3000 for in the "trading post" is usually bought for $350 or so from the weaver.

Some people go crazy about collecting the different patterns, even the new ones. It gets expensive. LOL Dont forget to buy a Hudson's Bay Blanket to go with your collection...

We have several Pendleton blankets for the Bambi, and use them to base decors on. Sometimes we are even able to get open yardage in a given design to make shams, dinette slip covers, etc... The latest we acquired is the New Mexico Centennial Commemorative ... it's a beauty...just arrived today... They are expensive, but they are also top quality and do well in an Airstream...

Those prices are ancient history. The Navajo weavers are far wiser these days.

We picked up the Acadia and the Rainier National Park blankets a couple of years ago. Beautiful and well made. Gave the Rainier away as a special gift.

Blankets

I started this thread because of the interest my wife has shown in these blankets. Her family has always used Pendleton products from shirts, shawls and blankets. We have some Beaver State editions and now she wants to start with the National arks we visit in the AS. I have been doing some research and found these blankets have been being issued since the 1900's. I am not interested in vintage and there are plenty of them for sale. I am going to start with the the Parks as we visit them this summer. Hopefully Yosemite, Yelowstone and Rainier. I believe there is still a production facility in Washugal WA right across the border from Portland. Anyway they sure are pretty and I know from the others we have also very comfortable. My brother has one from the Ducks Rose Bowl game and I believe they made a HUSKY (My personal favorite) edition as well. Who da thunk?

Well, we went to the Pendleton outlet in Washougal today and bought two National Park Blankets. We ended up getting the Yellowstone and Mt. Rainier. They are beautiful and the YNP has a shade of gold as a background color that looks great in the trailer. All in all a good day.

If you go to this outlet and know anybody that lives in or near Portland, take them with you. If they show their id you won't have to pay the WA state sales tax which is becoming up around 9%.

These are a gift from my Dad to my wife and she is thrilled. Thanks Dad, you crabby old fart. Sometimes you surprise me.
