Our Airstream Journey
Good day all,
I just wanted to share our Airstream journey over the last 10 years. The following represents our experiences and views and is meant to share information with fellow Airstream enthusiasts.
We made the mistake of going to the annual RV show and stepped into a 25’ international Serenity RBQ that was on display. We went back the next day traded in our fifth wheel and the rest is history.
Our TV is a 2011 F250 6.2 4x4. It has served us well and can tackle any mountain passes across the continent and has the payload, cargo capacity and comfort we appreciate.
We use a 12K Equalizer hitch and have towed up and down the US East coast and across Canada without problems, no cracks, dents or sway.
I wax the F250 and Airstream once a year with Meguiar’s Gold Class which does a great job. People still comment on how shiny and great the Airstream looks. The wax has provided protection from -30c Quebec winters to sunny droughts and rainy seasons in the Pacific Northwest. I tried Walbernize but prefer Meguiar’s.
The original Goodyear Marathons were finally replaced at the 8 year mark and had served us well. They were replaced with Goodyear Endurance which I also keep at 65psi.
The original Interstate batteries are now 10 yrs old and will be replaced in the spring even though they still hold a charge but they are due. I always charge them once a month during the winter months and removed them and stored them inside when we lived in Quebec.
We use a Honda EU2000i when boondocking and installed a Microair easy-start which works great allowing us to have the AC on with the generator.
The worst part of the journey was when we discovered a water leak from a bucked rivet around the door frame had rotted a 2’ x 3’ piece of the floor at the entry by the galley sink. Luckily I am somewhat handy and took on the repair and stripped out the interior front half of the trailer and replaced the damage during the winter break (very mild winters on Vancouver Island).
I also decided to convert the queen to twins as the original setup was just too cumbersome.
And of course I had to replace the flooring, so I used luxury vinyl planks laid perpendicular to the length. It looks great, turned out well and has performed flawlessly no buckling or movement from -15c to +45c temps.
Happy Campers!
