Someplace to keep the beer cold
Since you are going to buy the beer, a local Charlotte hardware store has just the thing for you Airstream aficionados. Course, it'll help if you've got an extra $650 lying around, to make this cooler yours. $599+tax.

My favorite at the moment is Sam Adams Rebel IPA... Kicks you in the nards, tons of hopsy goodness, still manages to not be “heavy”. That, or anything brewed by my good friend Vern Waldrop. That dude makes a seriously good beer. Related story, I took a few cases of his home brew with me to CanOpener a few years back. A Case of Medium Stout, and some kind of ale. Anyways, everybody I gave one to would take the bottle, look at the obviously Home made thing with no label on it, get that “oh jeez, another Home made beer...” look on their face, and would eventually take a sip, as a courtesy I guess. And, without fail, you’d see there expression change to “Hey! That’s a decent beer!” And every one of them would look back at the bottle to read the label, which didn’t exist...
-Red, enjoys a good beer, but won’t turn down a Miller...

New AS - Best Beer ... burp....
Remember when you couldn’t get them east of the Mississippi? Had a friend in the reserves that went out west and brought back a case or two... we enjoyed the heck out of those Coors! Admittedly, we were more about quantity back in those days...
-Red, flashing back to 1981...

Hi
A case or two? Must not have liked it very much... The typical run for my buddies generally involved a pickup truck and dangerously overloading it...

If you make a beer run in anything less than a one ton, you’re just asking for trouble. Endangering everyone on the highway... yada yada yada...
-Red, starting the “Beer Vehicle” debate...

Hi
Well, this *does* raise the vital question of how the beer should be "attached" to the truck to minimize sway .... burp ...
Somehow I seem to vaguely recall that many mistakes were made in this area resulting in damaged beer cases that had to be "put out of their misery" during the trip. I'm sure that was the reason that there was not as much beer delivered as loaded onto the truck

Hi Sign Brewing...Austin, TX
Many new AS friends were able to try "freshly canned "Hi Sign Brewing's Shamus Irish Red and Christie Blond Ale at Alumalina few weeks back in South Carolina. They are now selling Growlers at the Hi Sign Brewery in Austin, if your in the area over the Holidays! Stop on by the Brewery; 12 beers on tap right now and the brewery is kid friendly and dog friendly, with indoor, out door seating. Weather is great in Austin this time of year!
You can also purchase six packs of Hi Sign Beers at Whole Foods and HEB's in Austin area to take home!
Check out their website; many of the beers are also available on tap at many great food and beer places around Austin also! Check out the website for locations.

Hi
One of the interesting things we run into are some *really* nicely made growlers. Some of them are works of art. Not quite sure how we are going to accommodate all of our growing collection in the trailer ... maybe a second trailer towed behind the first one
Something I have not yet tried are "crowlers". They seem to be a compromise between a can and a growler. They would be easier to part with once empty. Possibly I should *try* harder to remember that when making purchases. For some odd reason the mind seems to be running a bit slow when ordering up the "to go" part of the inventory ... burp ....
============
One interesting little factoid: This whole "craft beer" thing is a bit older that some realize. I'm sure there are a few hundred stories like this one, all equally true:
Back when we lived in Cincinnati in the 80's Hudepol was one of the local breweries. They would qualify as a craft brewer today, but back in the 70's they were making pretty middle of the road beers. They go way back. My grandfather would tell stories about fetching their beer in a pail to bring home back in the late 1800's. In 1981 they came out with a beer called Christian Moerlein. It was done as a "legal in Germany" recipe. It was quite good and at least to me was the first indication of the swing away from "everybody brews the same stuff" beer. Weird as it may seem, there were a few Harvard Business School papers written at the time suggesting that what we now call craft beer might be a really good idea for the smaller breweries ....
I'd love to wind up the story with "everybody went on to great things". That's not how it all worked out. Hudepol merged with Little Kings and now is part of Sam Adams. Sometimes all the pioneers get are a bunch of arrows in the back ...

Bob- this might be one for your collection from Hi Sign in Austin? Just ordering them now for Christmas! IA bit pricy, but some folks have lots of money...I am getting 2 for Christmas gifts.
I have 12 empty 1/2 gal. glass bottles from various breweries around Montana that I keep at my cabin up there. We typically which will last a week or 2 perhaps...Those only cost $5 each empty, the brewers typically give you back the $5 dollars if you turn in their empties, assuming you want your "deposit" back... I obviously, don't do the refund thing too often...although the wife would like me to. A fill at Blackfoot Brewery in Helena on Wed's. is only $8-10 bucks and includes a pint. Used to be $5 bucks few years back...love Fresh Beer!

Hi
I've heard the claim that beer will store in various growlers for this or that length of time. Somehow mine never / ever make it that long. They have this really bad habit of going empty.... No idea how that happens ... burp ....
I'll freely admit that if you stop by here, I don't fill a growler as carefully as some places do. I don't have a dedicated growler wash station, I use StarSan at the sink. I also don't have a CO2 purge setup for growlers (let alone nitrogen ...). Pre-chilling growlers before they are filled ... not so much. My filling technique takes a minute or two. Standing there re-topping off a growler for ten minutes .... I'm not that patient . Putting growlers into a special fridge immediately after filling ... my fridges already are full of stuff
Those are nice looking though The idea of metal (as opposed to glass) makes a certain amount of sense in an AS. Christmas is coming ...

Key to keeping the growlers fresh is to make sure they are topped off, cap screwed down tightly, and keep cold. I have gone 3-4 weeks with several from MT back to TX and in June, back to MT from TX, (Hi Sign Brewing) via Portland, Idaho, and never opened for another week. They were very fresh still from Austin!
