I want to bring my 14ft Hobie Pro Angler Kayak with me while towing my 26ft FC

Hi Everyone,
I've recently purchased a 26ft Flying Cloud. I also have a 14ft Pro Angler Fishing Kayak that I want to bring with me. Any ideas on how to tow my Airstream and also bring the 14ft fishing kayak with me? custom made? I can't figure it out. Would love some ideas. Thanks in Advance

In a recent camp I observed a pickup truck with rear cap, kayak rack, and a front bumper rack to catch the front end.

Like Peter said, only practical solution; but will be a PITA loading and unloading. Several of those I camp with carry that way.

We carry a 16 ft. canoe on a rack. No topper so bikes can go in the bed. Sorry only picture I have on my phone.

To give you advice, knowing what tow vehicle you use would be helpful.

I use Yakima roof racks on top of my pickup cab for my 13 ft MalibuKayaks tandem.

I would avoid anything that increases the height of the rig. Your trailer is a reasonable height to fit under pretty much anything you will (likely) come across. Adding a couple feet to that .... not so much.

One really interesting thing I noticed while camping in Montana was a significant number of folks with hitches on the back of their trailers. They would hook up the RV to the truck and then hook up the boat trailer to the back of that. Down the road they would go towing the two behind their truck. No, you would not under any circumstances get me to to that !!!!

My friend, you have the absolute best setup for camping and paddling! Focus completely on setting up your TV for boat hauling, as you'll find that only rarely do you park right at the launch. And even if you did, what about the take-out?

That Hobie must be a beast! My wife paddles a Hobie Revolution 13, and that isn't fun to put up on the truck. I sorta solved the problem by putting on a 3rd rack as close to the back corner of the cap as I could. This has rollers on it, so I lift up one end of the boat and place it there. Then I lift the other end, and give it a mighty shove. Keeping a small folding ladder in the truck helps with reaching the tie downs. I use Thule racks, and Malone Sea Wing carriers. I don't like the kayak carriers that Thule sells, in that the Thules push in a smaller area, and when the boat heats up in the sun, it gets loose

Thule also has a spendy Hullivator system that droops over the side, then springs back into position. I've seen other paddlers use them, and it looks good.

I have a cable that locks to the hitch for when I park in sketchy areas (like blues clubs), but rarely use it.

This winter, I'll be building a Geodesic Aerolite Arrow 17, two person sit-in double bladed canoe. Should weigh in under 25 lbs. That will solve the weight annoyance problems!

For a car top rack, I highly recommend a Thule Hullavator. We have two on our SUV for our kayaks. Makes it very easy to load/unload from a taller vehicle. Downside is expense.

You didn’t say what you are towing with. Putting a rack on a short roof vehicle (pickup) can be a challenge.

We went with an Innova inflatable kayak - under 30lb - fits in it's own bag for easy storage in the truck.

James, We use this deal by Thule. It is hydraulically assisted so very easily lifted and lowered. You may have seen them around, Hullavator. Our kayaks are 10’ but no reason why a 14’ would not work out. For longer trips it is recommended to tie down bow and stern.

I use a Thule "hullivator" that hinges and lower the kayak over the side to chest level, making loading and unloading easy.

James, I initially used a ladder rack combined with Yakima kayak saddles and hullyrollers that allow rear loading on pivoting wheels that are lockable after loading. The photo including the red 22' tandem shows this combination. Eventually I switched to a camper shell with Yakima tower system with standard length bars incorporating my existing Yakima equipment. I added 78" long cross bars to allow for three kayaks or two kayaks and two bicycles. I change the bars out as necessary to fit the situation. The photo with the yellow kayak and bicycle show this combination utilizing the stock bars.

I have a 14' 2" Jackson Big Tuna fishing kayak (tandem). Without the seats it weighs 92 lbs. I use Malone saddles on the roof rack of my 2004 4Runner. I'm 72, 5'7" and I can take it down or put it back up by myself. (I have a small, plastic, folding 2-step ladder). I use a Suspenz Smart DLX Airless cart to get it to the water and back (stows in the rear compartment).

I secure it with 2 straps (updated to better ones after the 1st picture was taken) to the roof rack, 1 rope from the stern down to the hitch and 1 long V rope from the bow to nylon straps fashioned from an old life jacket (using a grommet kit from Harbor Freight). The nylon straps are secured under the hood to 2 bolts in the fenders. When not in use, I simply put them under the hood and close it so they are out of sight. You don't want the bow rope to be too taught, it just needs to keep the bow from catching wind.

I've driven from central Kentucky to Georgia to Florida to Louisiana to Mississippi to Arkansas to Texas and back to Kentucky with this rig and never had a problem.
