Have you ever...??
I want to do this so bad... Have you ever ridden in your Airstream trailer? Yes, it could be dangerous and illegal but so are a lot of things that we do every day. I just want to see how much stuff rattles, how it rides and simply enjoy the thrill. My previous RV was a motorhome and I wonder if it rides the same or if being in a trailer is really quiet without the motor noise. Does anybody want to admit and tell us what you experienced?

Wear earplugs and hold on.
Watch for flying objects.
Will your spouse be driving?
Do you have a good relationship?

I hear the expression of earthquake on wheels when this has been described.
There are some youtube videos of it also.
And of course you can't help but picture Lucille Ball in Long Long Trailer with her special rocks.

Ummm, I wouldn't, except perhaps around a parking lot.

Hi
Simple answer: it's a rough, noisy ride. Don't ask how I know this
If you *must* do something illegal, do it in a big empty parking lot and have radio communications with your driver.
As a much safer (and legal) alternative: Mount a camera in back and record what it looks like and sounds like. Something like a GoPro would do pretty well. As an added plus, you can post the result online ....

Oh wait...
That's illegal?
I better pull over and let my kids out.
Wait, what? I'm not "texting" and driving... it's a forum.
I'm Foruming and driving. Next you'll tell me I can't read a book while driving.

Never have ridden back there, but there must be a lot going on. Cabinet doors open, wine bottles fall out, the door closes again, wine bottle rolls under table, thankfully unbroken, throw pillows end up on the floor, laundry detergent bottle falls over and begins to leak. I suspect leprechauns, but never have caught one in the act.

Here is a GoPro set up in an Airstream.
https://youtu.be/zvu87MOMMVs
Here is a video of someone riding in SOB. I don't think the sound level does it justice because he makes a reference to how loud it is. There is a lot of "Oh boy, here we go" and just how black his dog really is.
https://youtu.be/UNMxDQ_UeKM
I did research to see what states allow it and got a mixed bag of results. There's a lot of misinformation. If you're thinking about doing it I suggest you go to those states' websites and get good information. Don't trust someone else's web, they could be wrong and you could be in trouble with the law. In my state (KY) I found resources that stated Yes, No and not specified. In the past I found that in KY it is not legal for travel trailers and legal for 5th wheels. On the other hand, it's perfectly legal to ride in the back of a pickup truck with no restraints. Go figure.

Not illegal everywhere. The Woodalls books have a chart that lists the states. Was very surprised to see that it was legal anywhere and have never talked to anyone who did it. I would not, but KS, AZ, NB, MD and a bunch of others seem to allow it. There is a disclaimer that they can't be held responsible if the info is incorrect and I would not be surprised to find that there is an agricultural qualifier in the state or local law. Pat
Edit - KY is listed as a no.

It does not look any worse than my MH.
It is loud, stuff vibrating, drawers sometimes bounce open, and the real fun begins when the family wants to use the bathroom or make a sandwich in the galley.
I should mount a Go-Pro next to my rear view mirror

Hi
The suspension on a trailer is *much* simpler than the suspension on a MH. That will transmit a lot more from the road to the inside. The hitch at one end and wheels at center design transmits a lot of motion from the TV. You can then toss in the hitch type. A weight distributing hitch will be a bit less crazy than a simple hitch.
Lots of variables, even before you get to road condition and speed ...

How would this relate to state laws requiring vehicle passengers to wear a seat belt?

From Woodall's chart as mentioned prior, NS and QC, in Canada, require a safety belt, but that is for riding in a pickup camper. None of the states or provinces show a seat belt requirement to ride in a travel trailer. Interesting that some states reference safety glass as a requirement to ride in a fifth wheel but not in a travel trailer. Maybe someone builds a fifth wheel bus? All quite odd. Suggest watching the movie and traveling in the TV only. Pat

Thanks-- I often wondered what happened in Bambi I, as the fridge door had a poor latch. We would open the front door after driving, find a white wine bottle that had somehow rolled under the dinette, but the fridge door innocently latched shut.
For anyone who hasn't seen Lucy and Desi in The Long, Long Trailer, it is highly recommended. There is a hilarious scene when Lucy decides to prepare dinner en route.

I had trouble finding the follow up video we made a year later when I'd added shock absorbers and switched to a pivot point projection type hitch.
Here it is!
The ride is much smoother after these changes.
