Do You Loan Out Your AS?

We had an "aquaintance" from church say they heard we have an "RV" and could they borrow it to put up relatives for a week or so around Christmas. We paused, not knowing what to say, they noticed and said, Think about it and we'll call you...

When we had our SOB box trailer, we loaned it out a couple of times to "friends" for family overflow. With that trailer, it wasn't so much a part of the family. My wife and I talked about the plusses and minuses of loaning it out...

+ Help someone out in a pinch
+ Be a good neighbor
+ It's only property
+ They are nice people
+ Don't want to be selfish

- It's our baby
- We would have to clean it out
- They might use the toilet
- They might take showers and fill the tank without knowing how to monitor level (or caring to)
- No place to dump
- They might not treat the trailer as having value (it's not mine)
- They might damage something

With the SOB trailer, it was easier to loan since it did seem to be "just a trailer (or RV)." In the end, we chose to not loan it out, we hope the individuals do not take offense.

What have you done in these cases?

No loaning. Not ever.

Might loan in an extreme emergency, but it would take that.

Me too!

We always said that we'd only ever loan out the Airstream to my wife's father as he's a seasoned RVer and sailor. Since he said he doesn't want to borrow it then it's no, no, no to everyone else!

No, I don't loan out cars either. Good way to lose friends fast when something goes terribly wrong.

I let Antsey McClain stay in my AS at The Bash I. But I was there if there was any problems. I would not loan it out to someone I don't know. Same thing with my Cessna. I only loaned it one time in 20 years to my long time CFI. I still worried the whole time it was gone. I don't think I would loan my AS or plane again.

Nope, not going to happen. But make me offer I could not refuse and I would be happy rent or sell it.

Not only wouldn't I, but I find it audacious that someone would even ask!

Absolutely not!

No tools either.

All people seem to have an innate ability to screw things up, even when they have some investment in them (own them or they are at least your friends or neighbors). Total strangers have no investment at all.

I don't loan out anything unless for some reason I don't want it back. Every time I have in the past, I've either never gotten it back, or it came back in such wretched condition it was only worth throwing away.

Rent it out, maybe. If they put down a damage deposit and sign a short-term lease so I'd have legal recourse if they broke anything. When you hand over something for free, the recipient thinks you don't value it, and so they don't either.

And if it's to a "friend-of-a-friend" then even renting would be contingent upon meeting the people in question face-to-face and accepting them.
