Camp Chair Mulling

Oh - I have in the mail coming to me my newest - well - sorta "chair" - it's a hammock that I'll be experimenting with for both general airstream use but for various camping use (not to divert my own thread into that)

But it will be a cool addition for some relaxing and napping when air-streaming

Unless you want a beach specific chair and you are all about style, these are 1/3 the price and don't bend or break.

The oversize Coleman chairs that fold front to back are comfortable, but big, requiring more room to store-

Must go in the bed of the truck under the tonneau-

I took the wrong way!! I went up this back road - it was tight but doable - missed apparently a sign not to go that way with a trailer - got to a small bridge near elkmont and it was clearly marked not for trailers etc max 10 tons

Long story short - park ranger came and gave me the go ahead

12 feet wide - near 90 degree turn - I took it as wide as possible and fit with little room to spare

Worst anxiety of my 2 years of towing yet - it was like a bad dream come true

Hard lesson learned - could have been worse

I took the east entrance (steep one lane dirt road - with two way traffic) during a rain storm with an American Expedition Vehicle (AEV) Jeep Wrangler Unlimited while towing the 2010 Conqueror Commander we owned before the Eddie Bauer AS. It was harrowing and the tranny on the Jeep overheated twice. I can't imagine towing the AS up that East Side (off I-40) entrance!

We've been mulling over chairs for awhile. We had strong backs for a breif time, then bought the Zero Gravity Chairs. We decided to ditch finally our Zero Gravity Chairs. They were just too big and falling apart after eight months of use while full timing.

We replaced them with the lightweight and compact Big Agnes - Helinox Camp Chair

They're a bit spendy, but overall they're a great chair. We tried out a set a friend had over New Years which drove our decision. Two weeks in and couldn't be happier. Plus, they are so compact when folded up, they fit in the bin under the dinette.

I must say - this style of chair so far has absolutely blown me away

I now use my Helinox one chair on so many trips - in airstream - short backpacking - canoe camping - events - and I love em

Those you have are a bit bigger - I wanna try one!

The Sunset the back comes up behind the head, so you have full neck support. The Camp Chair only comes up to your shoulders, so you can't lean your head back. Otherwise, they are the same shape and size.

Well I ordered a Helinox Sunset Camp Chair yesterday. Now I will be able to report on a direct comparison between my Kermits and the Helinox. Does anyone offer the accessory ball feet to put on the legs to keep them from sinking. I saw some for the Chair One but I hear they don't fit the Sunset.

1 year in - I feel that I will never worry about accessory feet - ymmv

I've ised direct on sand in destin (for example) and yes it sinks some but stops and all is well

I recall someone on the web using two length of small electrical conduit as rails for feet - others used like some small tennis balls -

I won't bother with any of it - but give it a go first and see

I'm not aware of any formal accessories made ad sold

One accessory I want to make for mine is an "under quilt"

Keeps the bum toasty - I use a simple down jacket hung beneath to the same effect but I want to make one that fits my chair for colder conditions

Ok, here's a comparison between the Kermit chair and the Helinox Sunset chair. This is based on me spending 20 minutes with the Helinox and 3 years with the Kermits, so my opinion may change as I get more experience with the Helinox.

Overall comfort: Helinox wins
Sitting position: Kermit preferred, more upright, ymmv
Ease to get in/out: Same
Price: Same
Time to assemble: Helinox by narrow margin
Size when disassembled in bag: Helinox by narrow margin
Weight: Helinox
Armrests: Kermit, not available from Helinox
Drink holder: Kermit, not available from Helinox
Durability/Longevity: This is where Kermit wins hands down. I don't believe Helinox's shock cord design will hold up compared to the Kermit's simple bullet proof design. The Kermits will last for generations. This has been testified to by owners of Kermits in the motorcycle community that have used them for decades.

So, hard choice. Best option is to own both of them.

I don't think you can compare the durability without actually testing it, sorry that's an unfair assessment you leveled and a bit biased. I also find it hard to believe a wood chair folds down to the same compact size.

Have you seen the Kermit packed away? By far the smallest package of any camp chair I have ever owned. I wouldn't want to use them for backpacking due to weight but they pack small and are reasonably comfortable.

I cannot speak to the durability of the Helinox but I can repair anything that might befall the Kermit including old age.

I paid $149 on Amazon for the Helinox Sunset. They are $174 on the Helinox website. The Kermits are $139 plus $40 for the leg extensions on the Kermit website. You can find them for less on ebay sometimes.

I just don't think nylon shock cords will last as long as steel and wood...I may be wrong...
