Airstreem typo

I spelled it that way as this is what I got this morning in an email from Airstream

Wally Bynam's Portrait

In 1956, Airstream moved from their Main Street location in downtown Los Angeles to Norwalk, which was later annexed by the city of Santa Fe Springs...more

Spellchecker? Have a good story speaking of wordsmithing. Was in a game of scrabble the other day w/my brother and he laid down "Internet" as a 30+ word. My wife says challenge the word - the only dictionary he had was from the 70s. No "internet" Got the word removed. May not get any better than that.

That was a shot at a joke, with the irony being that he couldn't use Google to define the word "internet"...

-Red, not as funny as he thinks he is...

Now I've had to stop and think... What words or phrases didn't even exist 40 years ago, the year my Airstream, was made?

First one I think of is: Right click on...

Before there was an Internet, if you didn't know the meaning of the word "dictionary" where would you have looked it up?

But to continue Panama Red's theme of things that didn't exist 40 years ago…
Laptops, e-mail, mobile phones, GPS, MRI, LEDs, LCD television screens, photovoltaic solar panels, biodiesel, bar codes, ATMs…

Swipe

Then there's the language itself. Anyone remember when swipe meant steal?

Or when you gave, instead of gifting?

But on the other hand, there are still some holdover phrases that have outlived their origins. We still "dial" a telephone even though many people today have never seen a roatary-dial telephone outside of an old movie.

I still say "album" every time someone brings out a new... well, what do you call it now that "CD" is passé?

Some things never change! Even on Office 2013, if you look at the ribbon on a word document, the icon to "save" a document is a still a floppy disc! An item that also didn't exist 40 years ago. ;-)

The last pay phones I remember cost a quarter, yet when one is ratted out to the police it's still "drop a dime on"

Nuke - meant war, not warm in the microwave

Groovy - has fortunately gone the way of the dodo

Boondocks - had a nasty overtone of "ghetto" not into the wilds of nature

A couple of those actually are 40 years old. Bar Codes and ATMs have both been around that long.
