Odd rubber bumper thingy... what is it?

We just got a 1979 Sovereign 31' center bath about 2 months ago. I am polishing it currently and ran into an odd bumper stop thing that, as far as I can tell, is of no use. It looks like its been there a while. Anyone have an idea what it may have been for?

Description:
It is a black piece of rubber (about 2" x 1" x 3/4" deep) with a white plastic cover held on with 2 screws. It is on the curbside, near the front of the camper, just behind the front awning arm, low on the side (see pictures below). The bumper part itself is facing the front of the camper and doesn't align with the awning in any useful way, even if the awning is swung all the way down.

That's the "tail light monitor."

You can look in your rear view mirror and see what the trailer tail lights are doing.

You need a new cover for it though.

Thingy

I think it might be your (rear) turn signal indicator. It lights for each turn signal that lights on the rear of your trailer. Seems I read that it was an l.e.d. or fiber optics. Someone more knowledgeable will chime in on this I'm sure. Happy Trails, Ed

Wow, you all are quick! Thanks for the info on this. I didn't even notice there were lights embedded in it. I will have to take a closer look tomorrow.

Andy, since you mentioned it... do you sell the cover?

There are no lights in that cover.

The monitor operates on "fiber optics."

We have both plastic and metal covers.

"Odd rubber bumper thingy... what is it?"

I always referred to it as a Doo-Hickey.
