Unhappy Locked out of our exterior compartments...no keys

When we purchased our trailer we were told that the owner would have a key for the exterior compartments... he was wrong. We can only get into 2 that were left unlocked. We took one of the panels down to a locksmith to have a key made but that key will only open the front door and that one exterior panel. What's going on? Do all the exterior compartments have different locks? HELP!
Thanks,
Anna and Greg

Locked out of our exterior compartments...no keys

Greetings Anna and Greg!

Assuming that there have been no changes along the line, the same key should fit all of the exterior compartments. This is true on both my '64 Overlander International and '78 Argosy Minuet. You might want to try some graphite lock lubricant to see if it is a problem of corrosion or lack of lubrication. On my Overlander this was a problem with two of the four compartment locks. On both of my trailers, I have discovered that there are tricks required to unlock certain compartments - - lift-up and push in while turning the lock with one compartment, push-in on door while turning the key on another. If none of this works, it has been reported that they compartment locks are very similar from one coach to another so it is possible that an Airstream dealer may have a key that would open your compartment allowing you to take the lock to a locksmith for rekeying.

Unfortunately, ours do have a different key for each lock. No idea on the history of why??? But we do have all the keys.

Once we are all done with the polishing & exterior restoration, we intend on changing out all the cylinders to one key...this is easy for a locksmith to do.

Most of our access doors are accessible from the inside. Under a bed, behind the fridge, through a cupboard...maybe you can open them from the backside. As a last resort, you may have to have a locksmith drill out the cylinders and get new cylinders & keys...

Good luck! Please post your solution...

Shari

I am having the same problem. Seller lost key for external compartments on my trailer. what a bummer. I am wondering if there is some sort of skeleton key that would fit all airstreams of my vintage (1970 Sovereign) or if I'm just going to have to call a locksmith out? Does anybody know about this? thanks. -Ida

There is a common key, but the previous owners may have had the locks rekeyed.

Our OverLander Had 4 different keys
Main entrance
Potable water
Battery Boxes
Curbside and Rear Panel
Plus what I have added
LP
Ball lock
Tongue lock
I wish we had just one key. I could have my locksmith re-key I guess.
Then I would not have the fun of searching for the correct key,LOL

The PO of our trailer had every lock keyed separately, so I have more keys than a high school janitor.
2 keys for the main entry door (main and deadbolt)
1 key for right side
1 key for rear
1 key for left side
1 key for fridge
1 key for LP hold down
1 key for tongue lock
1 key for hitch head
I'm sure others have more, but there can't be that many more...

Ah, those keys are sort of generic in that often enough you can use the wrong key to open the compartments. On several occasions I've used our collection of lost-and-found RV keys to open up the compartments of someone who comes in with lost keys. (They're a bit better than MGB keys, where the fit is even looser, but still ...)

Get the compartments open, and then take them to a true-blue locksmith to get some fitting keys made.

The outside locks are sort of generic and general. I have had 3 airstreams and all my outside keys were more or less the same. Phone up a local RV dealer and ask them if they have a trailer key made by Chicago lock company and stamped 1101X. Also phone up a local locksmith.
If this key doesnt work the locks have been changed and will need to be removed from the inside or drilled out. They are not much of a lock and could easily be picked anyway.
