Entry door problem

We have a 1972 27' Overlander that we cannot get the door open. We put the key into cylinder, turn it, lift recessed handle and pull. Door latch does not seem to release. We had locksmith out and he suggested drilling lock pad out and removing entire mechanism or possibly prying door far enough out(there is considerable play in it already) to release latch. Any help or ideas will be appreciated.
