Good question on the venting. Airstream did refer to this as a vented box and on ours, best we could tell, there are some holes on the sides for cables that are covered by the banana wrap which does not have an airtight fit outboard of the frame. Also, the seal is only on the top so the hinge area can vent air as well.

Do you mean the round opening aft of the battery box? That's for the bath fan outlet. Maybe I'm not getting what you mean.

Steve, how far around is the door seal supposed to go?

Another good question. I had forgotten that I left a space at the top without the seal. I’m sure I duplicated the original installation so this would aid in venting. Otherwise, the seal extends around the opening on both sides down to the hinge. Here’s a pic.

I had seen other pictures with the seal missing at the very top and I wondered why that was.

I’m jealous of how original and in good shape your Safari is.

If I can bother you for another pic, can you take a photo under the camper above the steps? I would like to know if there is visible plywood there. I am taking apart that area and from top down I have 3/4” plywood, then aluminum, then some 1/4” plywood touching the step outrigger tops. But it is cut away so it doesn’t go across the whole opening above the steps….just on top of the outriggers. I have seen a pic of a Safari with visible plywood there. Just would like to know that it’s supposed to be. Thanks!

Here are a couple of pics under the step area. I don’t see any exposed plywood under the trailer.

New problem. I am trying to replace the Nutserts that hold the bolds for the door cables (the ones that keep the door from opening too far).

My problem is hopefully shown in the photos. The Nutsert is installed by basically squeezing it to compress it a bit, so it tightens in the hole and won't come back out.

My issue is where the "bend" takes place as it's compressed. The thickness of the plastic housing and the metal inner support pieces are too thick for the nutsert to work. The "bend" is inside the plastic rather than out of the inner side of the metal "wall".

If anyone has replaced these and has tips, I would appreciate it.

I think I found some Nutserts that are made for thicker walls. I have them on order. We shall see.

Success! You can see in the photo that the new rivet nut is longer and has a longer crimp area.

Question: What are dimensions of the interior of the battery box when the door is closed? I want to put in a slide rail so the battery can slide out, but after seeing this, I realize I don't think I can do that if the door closes it will shortened the space I need for the rail system which is 14.24. thanks

I don't have the dimensions handy but it is going to be barely deep enough for the battery to sit snugly in there, so I think your measurement will be too much.
