Why do we call it a gaucho?

What is the etymology of this synonym for the sofa or couch?

A Gaucho can refer to:
  • Gaucho (Gaúcho in Portuguese, Cowboy in English), a word for a South American cattle herder.
Now depending on your gender and marital status this might be a welcome find, of course I would prefer a Goucha or Cowgirl, but neither was found in my Airstream.
I do keep looking though!

  • Gauchos are a style of very flowing and loose fitting, flared pants with an elastic waistband, commonly worm by young dancers, but also worn casually.
Again, a young female dancer would have been a nice find. And while some old loose fitting garments were left behind by the previous owners, I think they fell into the category of bloomers.

There was an Ammonia aroma one night, but that turned out to be the refrigerator failing. I did find some cleaners under the sink like
Ajax and bleach, but thankfully no Gaucho.
  • Gaucho, an album by Steely Dan.
While I like Steely Dan, I'm not familiar with this particular album. It has not turned up in the rig.
Clearly this would be pushing the GVW of my 28 foot Excella.
Just the mention of a sports team huddled in your Airstream would undoubtedly get the Airstream community on a heated and passionate debate of axel replacement, loading and pre-loading, drum brakes vs disk, beefed up frames, tire pressure, and the 70's.
Of course an astute owner, just by looking at the angle of the torsion suspension, would know that a sports team was lurking in the coach.
Therefore, even if the University of California, Santa Barbara, Gauchos sports team were living in my 28 foot Excella, I'd PM someone first.

GMC Gaucho a mid 70's full-sized van model produced by General Motors
Nope, no 70's full size van was found in or around my rig.
No Portuguese speaking natives of Rio Grande do Sul, popped out of the under bed bins.

No football players fumbled with the wheel chocks.

Renato or Ronaldinho were not found, but a VCR tape of "Nothing but trouble" staring Chevy Chase was discovered wedged between the empty space next to the water heater.
Now, despite my best efforts, Gaucho has not shown up in my Airstream? What I have found is a sofa that folds out into a bed, and after sleeping on it for one night I did wake up a little Gracho?

Michael

Hi Michael,

I was wondering how long that would take.

I'm kinda with Jammer, though. How did the term come to be applied to the sofa/bed devices? (Other than finding a gaucho on one.)

it might have started like the I and 1 confusion in vin numbers.

it was supposed to be a coucho, but in transcribing, it became gaucho and the rest as they say, is history.

It is a little known fact that the term "gaucho" was coined by Groucho Marx. He was often heard telling the ladies "hey lady how about you come to my trailer and visit with Groucho on the caucho" But that fat cigar (and the bourbon) kept getting in the way and the word was slurred into "gaucho" and it stuck.

The gaucho couch was named after it's inventor "Gaucho" Ohcuag from Norway. He was not very well liked in Jackson Center and had a reputation for being a bit pompous, so they named a couch after him.

The name gaucho comes from the sound you make after sleeping on one.....as you get up in the morning you say " g-ouch-o"!!!

They are great back killers for sure!

Michael, do you have a bot or something that does that? :-)

I take it that, how shall we say, our wisdom exceeds our knowledge in this area?

As a lingering Steely Dan fan (go ahead, ask about the etymology of their name... I dare ya!) I'm just sure that the term that refers to the couch came from their song Gaucho.

Quote:
Who is the gaucho amigo
Why is he standing
In your spangled leather poncho
And your elevator shoes
Bodacious cowboys
Such as your friend
Will never be welcome here
High in the Custerdome
Never mind that the couches were referred to by that term in the 1950s pre-dating Steely Dan as a band, and that there is nothing in the song that would actually refer to a couch... and that the use of the term in the song is probably in a "cowboy" reference to a man dressed oddly standing in his friend's living room.

Yes, DESPITE all that evidence to the contrary... that MUST be the origin of the useage of "gaucho" for couch.

Roger

62Overlander,

So if I am following this correctly...., any scuffs, stains, bourbon residue, etc. on my FC couch are really.... gaucho marks?

I think it may have had something to do with a piece of furniture that the gauchos made to sleep on that folded up during the daytime, a pallet of some kind, and used by early cowboys (known as gauchos), the word got attached to it and became common usage.

Very close, Rich,

In our case the scuff marks on the floor could be referred to as those annoying...gaucho marks...

4 things we know....

1. the origin of the term is held in trust by those that invented the term (and it wasn't ne1 from a/stream)...

send me a sase with a fresh new jackson and i'll share that history..

2. not only do most folks NOT know the word origin, they are confused about when to apply it or even how SPELL it...

3. there are a WHOLE lotta threads here on this topic, in all shapes and sizes...

4. the art mans answer is a REpost echo thing....

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f38/...-up-60389.html

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f39/...rms-24867.html

the threads above show a mix of jack knife sofas (confused as Gs) and genuine Gs...
_________

sofa beds...

1. the typical HINGED L shaped sofa that converts into a bed is not a G...

it's a jack knife style sofa bed (that's what was/is in michael's trayla)

jack knife IS the name 4 the front sofa in most modern 'streams with many examples in the rv world...

RV Surplus

2. sofa beds made with a 3-fold mattress buried UNDER the cushions are NOT typically seen in rvs (heavy and they use up the storage space)

often referred to as fold out sleeper sofas...

3. the G is a sofa with a SLIDING or folding PLATFORM under the padded sitting area...

this platform PULLS out like a drawer OR folds open after the cushions are removed...

then the cushions are REpositioned and fit together in jig saw puzzle manner to provide a sleeping platform...

examples of this are typically U shaped or L shaped or J shaped corner or end sofa/dinette sitting platforms with LOOSE cushions...

there are some good pics of the older styles in some of the threads above ....

and the d.w. 75th custom edition is an example of a newer model with a real G sofa/bed...

shown in post #7 here...

__________

back to the o.p., your trailer has a jack knife style sofa/bed...

cheers
